Odeon Theatre 283 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC

The Odeon Theatre was a long, narrow cinema located at 283 Bourke St, Melbourne, in the heart of what is now the Bourke Street Mall - Kodachrome streetscape photo taken in the early 50’s - Kodachrome was favored by professional photographers, for its rich, high-contrast images.

Opened in 1951, it was formerly the Liberty Theatre (rebuilt after a fire) and originally the Melba Theatre, situated near the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets, near the Leviathan building. If you look to the left you will see the neon sign for the long demolished Tivoli Vaudeville theatre.

Closed in February 1978 and demolished later that year for the Centrepoint Mall development. It was a well-known, long-running cinema in Melbourne City.
