Over the weekend in mid-April, 1963, burglaries were reported by three businesses in Davenport. A safe containing $90 was taken from the Davenport Country Club office. About $300 was taken from the safe in the financial secretary’s office of St. John’s Methodist Church at 14th and Brady Streets. And $469 was stolen from a cash register at Brooke’s One Thirty Grille at 130 E. Third Street. Entrance to the business was gained by prying open a rear door. On April 30th, Brooks, Ltd., which operated Brooks One Thirty Grille, was authorized to issue 25,000 shares of stock at $1 each. Incorporators were D. Brooks McCain, Maxine I. McCain and Attorney Charles K. Peart. Mr. Peart served as mayor of Davenport from 1982 to 1986.
In July of 1963, Howard Gessner, retired owner of the former Gessner Coal Company, passed away in his apartment in the Mississippi Hotel. He was a life resident of Davenport and died at the age of 71.
The “Sportsmen Lounge” at 120 E. Third Street became the “High Hat Lounge” in August of 1963."
