The Herald (Melbourne, Vic) Wed 16 Dec 1953 – Newspaper advert for “The Robe” in CinemaScope, announcing tonight’s Gala Premier *
Quote: CinemaScope, the new dimensional photographic marvel, makes you part of “THE ROBE” – CinemaScope’s Anamorphic Lense on the newly created curved Miracle Mirror Screen. 20th Century Fox Stereophonic Sound envelopes you in the greatest story of love & faith ever told, as the imperial might of Rome crushes against the word of god.
- Melbourne’s night of nights*
A glittering premier in the glamorous Hollywood tradition. See the arrival of distinguished personalities and beautifully gowned women. Hear the RAAF Royal Visit Band – Roving spotlights & radio interviews – Movietone News cameras in gay celebration of a memorable occasion.
- CinemaScope – The technical details of the Regent installation.
The new giant CinemaScope screen was installed over the orchestra pit, stretching across the face of the existing proscenium for the presentation of “THE ROBE” – The Wurltizer organ was re-sited off its hoist and located in the left hand proscenium box. The screen was erected in two week-ends at a cost of £20,000. The screen measures 54ft. wide and is 21ft. high with an approx 5ft curve — approximately the same proportions as the eye’s field of vision.
The screen stayed in front of the proscenium until CAROUSEL commenced (June 28th 1956) Then it was moved back in a reduced size into the proscenium and behind the existing curtains – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
