The photograph above shows the façade of the Odeon in the summer of 1966. Once this area was covered with Shaws glazed tiles fitted by the original cinema contractor William F. Blay Ltd of London which matched those on the side piers. However, during 1954 a serious fire damaged most of the glazed tiles within the centre recess. During this period building materials were still difficult to obtain so it was decided to use plain brick matching those above the parade of shops on either side. Beneath the Odeon name sign are four horizontal brick ledges which were intended to be used for lettering of the current film programme, but never used.
