The Mural and Dress Circle and Lounge entrance.

This striking mural of London’s most familiar landmark was a tribute to a country towards which Australians of the era, who were about 95% of British Isles origins, still had very strong ties and a wartime alliance which they had shared since the first day of the 1939-45 war. When in later years the theatre’s name was changed to the FORUM, a rather drab sepia-toned painting of the Forum in Rome took its place.

The artist was Frederick Millward Grey – born and trained in London, later Head of the South Australian School of Art (now a discrete part of the University of South Australia). He also did a number of tourism posters for South Australia in the 1930s.
