Howell’s Drive-In in Canton, Georgia. The remnants were visible driving through early 2010s when the lot was bulldozed. Growing up, people told me they stopped showing movies there in the late 1970s/1980s. I remember it being abandoned in the 1980s.
The Howell family also owned “Howell’s Rest Station”
Photos via Facebook Group “You’re probably from Canton, Georgia, if you remember”:
Details from some of the comments:
The abandoned screen was blown down into Univeter Road at the intersection of Hwy. 5 by a tornado 1989, 1990 or 1991
A children’s play ground at one point was down to the left below the screen.
A comment by Sheree Weaver Kelley in the Facebook group: “The Woodall’s reopened the drive in back in the summer of 75. I worked there. While helping get the place ready to open, I was working in the ticket booth. Guess what I found? The Howell Sister lipstick. I wish I had kept some for my curio cabinet. However I was 17 years old and had no idea that I would grow up liking vintage things. I do remember that The Woodall’s did an excellent on with the drive in. On any Friday or Saturday night, the cars would be lined down Univeter Road.”
Robert Aulgur: “I was 13 when I started working at Howell’s drive inn. It was my second job , but some Great memories. When somebody blows the horn I still jump and think it’s time to change the reels!”
