Photograph showing the exterior of the Gaumont Palace. The Opening Ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Plymouth and Lady Astor. Architect William Henry Watkins. Designed by Percy Bartlett, who also designed the three other Gaumonts at Exeter, May 1931. Barnstable, August 1931. and Coventry, October 1931. After which he left the Watkins practice to join Boots, Nottingham in 1932 where he eventually became chief architect. The Gaumont Palace first Manager Mr R.E. Eady. From March 25th 1941 its name changed to Gaumont. It closed during the Plymouth Blitz and re-opened on Monday 5th May 1941 screening “Son of Monte Cristo” from Midday until 8 pm. The Gaumont closed on Saturday 2nd December 1961. The final film was “Francis of Assisi” and “Temple of the Swinging Doll”. The Compton organ was sold to the Bible Christian Chapel in Embankment Road. Later it was sold on, to whom no one knows!!!
