Photograph showing one of fifteen gold and silver metal grilles that covered the fifteen radiators that were fitted throughout the Restaurant and Snack Bar. Viewed at top of picture is a table laid on the upper level of the two tier restaurant, one of the publicity releases for the restaurant stated. ‘The ultimate in novelty has been introduced in the form of lining the walls with an Aviary containing many brightly coloured tropical birds.’ Sadly this was to prove disastrous as on the 26th August 1940 the local paper reported, on the 25th August ‘A direct hit by a high explosive bomb lands on the Rex circle blowing the cinema apart. The frontage and restaurant survive, the Aviary in the restaurant was damaged but some of the birds were found to be still on their perches…..’ Sadly the management did not removed them earlier.
