Located in the western Sydney suburb of Parramatta, at the corner of Macquarie Street and Marsden Street. The Astra Theatre opened on 21st November 1935. It was equipped with a Christie 2 Manual organ, which comprised of pieces from other organs, and was opened by organist Penn Hughes. The console had an illuminated surround.
The Astra Theatre suffered a small fire in the stage area in 1938.
The Astra Theatre continued to operate until 1977, then it was leased out and reopened in 1981, closing on 10th September 1984.
It was taken over by Greater Union on 15th August 1985, reopening with Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future”. It was closed with Tom Cruise in “Top Gun”
It was demolished and Great Union Cinemas built and opened their Greater Union Movies 3 on the site (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures) Notes by Ken Roe
