This IMAX theatre was opened on January 23, 1998, and was the first IMAX theatre built within a multiplex in Canada. It was also the first ever installation of IMAX’s 15-perf/70mm 3D SR (Small Rotor) projection system, featuring smaller projectors than the massive GT projectors that had been used up to that point. The screen measures 72 feet wide by 59 feet tall at a 1.43:1 aspect ratio. The theatre originally had seating for 271, but this was reduced to 236 during renovations in 2010.
In 2011, the theatre was converted to IMAX’s 2K digital projection system - “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” was the last film presentation at the time. However, 70mm projection was brought back one more time for “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012, projecting 70mm film for the last time on September 6th. Although the theatre still has a 1.43:1 screen, the digital projectors are limited to a 1.90:1 aspect ratio, unfortunately. Hopefully IMAX’s laser projection system can be installed in the future. It’s still a great place to see a movie, in any case…
