The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 – 1954) Tuesday 6 February 1934 - reports *

1934 – The Civic Theatre, Auburn, has been completed at a cost of £50,000 It seats 2300 persons. It is of Moorish design to plans of Kaberry and Chard, architects It was commenced several years ago, but operations were suspended during the depression When work was recommenced the managing director of Western Suburbs Cinema, Ltd, the owners, added a number of important features to the construction, including a large vestibule, foyer, and buffet More than 187 tons of steel were used in the construction The main girder supporting the dress circle is 80 feet long by seven feet in depth, and weighs 26 tons Another girder over the proscenium is 56 feet long and weighs nine tons The roof trusses vaiy ftom 100ft to 80ft spans The foundations comprised more than 500 cubic yards of reinforced metal concrete, and with the floors, columns, and lintens etc total led 9000 square yards The roof is covered with super six corrugated cement sheets of an area of 24,000 square feet

THE INTERIOR*

The interior of the theatre is designed on modern lines and the colour scheme Is richly executed The decorations embrace original blending of orange blue gold, and green The stage is fitted with a tower 5ft high to pro- vide for “disappearing” scenery and screen It has been designed to accommodate stage productions of considerable magnitude In a separate building, designed In keeping with the theatre, is housed an emergency electricity generating plant, a garage.
