This beautiful stone building graces the wide King William Street which is named for the King who was on the throne when the first settlers came in 1836 to the South Australian experiment in colonization which admitted only free settlers who could prove their moral worthiness. They came from all of the countries of the British Isles, and to a lesser but very influential extent, from Silesia in the Kingdom of Prussia.
The self-governing British Province of South Australia in 1894 was the first place in the world to grant women the right to vote and to stand for public office, and it gave this right also to the indiginous Australian aborigines.
