Scala 1957

In 1950, during the reconstruction of Rotterdam, R. Uges and his family made a plan for a new theater. This plan was presented in 1952, but the lack of money delayed the implementation until 1956.

Architect B. Hoogstrate designed the new Scala theater together with executive architect G.E. Lette. The realization he unfortunately did not witness, because he died in 1956.

The third Scala opened in 1957 on December the 12th by Major van Walsum. The first picture was Charly Chaplin’s new movie “A King in New York”.

However the Westblaak was still a dead end street in those days. The theater was hardly visited because of that and had to be closed already in 1958. The building was sold to the Westland Mortgagebank.
