Roxy Theatre

Nowra Roxy drawing by Guy Crick published in Everyones 21st August 1935 (colorized). Licensed on 6th September 1935 for 772 patrons, the theater opened on Wednesday 14th August 1935 with RCA-Photophone equipment. Guy Crick (1901-1964) & Bruce W. Furse (1906-1967) were leading Australian cinema architects in the 1930s, notable for their ‘Kings’ Sydney suburban circuit - which featured remodeled and newly constructed cinemas in similar art deco/moderne style. The Roxy was built and operated by the partnership of Owen & Sutton, with Ronald H. Sutton acting as resident manager for three years until he moved to Scone, where Owen launched the Civic (also designed by Crick & Furse) under a lease agreement, in 1938.
