St. James Theatre

In February 1953 Twentieth Century-Fox announced that all their future productions would be made in a revolutionary new widescreen anamorphic technique. In the panic that followed, studios and exhibitors scrambled for ideas. One simple practice, that of showing existing Standard format films on larger screens cropped in height to create width, was soon adopted by most exhibitors. In Australia it was MGM who led the pack, launching their ‘Panoramic Screen’ with the release of “Young Bess” on 2 June 1953.
