The St James ran the first film version of “Showboat” – a Universal part talkie - in 1929 under Union Theatres management. MGM produced a spectacular Technicolor version which ran at the St James over Xmas 1951. The most successful version however was Universal’s 1936 remake which ran for 48 weeks at the Liberty theater shortly before MGM took control there. That season stood as an Australasian record run until the arrival of GWTW a few years later.
