On Saturday 18 July 1931 at the St James Ernest C. Rolls launched a grand gala opening of ‘the greatest vaudeville bill ever presented in Australia’ featuring many artists from the Union Theatres talent pool. There was a hint of foreboding when star performers ‘Fred’s Football Dogs’ were unable to appear for the opening and were replaced by ‘Long Tack Sam’. The show terminated abruptly after eleven days, Rolls left for Melbourne and the theater went dark. This turned out to be the last live show ever presented at the St James. Music Hall variety bills of this nature were particular victims of the ‘talkie’ revolution.
