St. James Theatre

Top: Colorized photo of worker activity in the St James proscenium area March 1926 a few days before the theater opened. “No No Nanette” launched the St James on Friday 26 March 1926 and ran 21 weeks until Friday 20 August. A new show opened the following day. Producer Hugh J. Ward (1871-1941) was an American actor who had settled in Australia, becoming a senior figure in J. C. Williamson management before joining up for projects with the Fuller brothers from 1922. He wound back his theater activity following the season of Nanette. Bottom Right: Possessing ‘a somewhat stockish figure’ English light soprano actress Elsie Prince (1902-1988) in her role as Nanette ‘won over the audience with her personality, joie de vivre, enthusiasm and obvious sincerity’ said the Sydney Sunday Times. Miss Prince appeared in several more St James shows over the following few years
