April 8, 1951. Probably the first movie I ever saw at the Avon Cinema in Providence was this 1951 release of the 1949 “La Forza del Destino,” the opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The Leonora was Nelly Corradi (voice, Caterina Mancini) , Seen here are Mira Vargas as Preziosilla and Tito Gobbi as Don Carlos, Alvaro was performed by Gino Saltimberghi (voice, Galliano Mancini). It was directed by Carmine Gallone, assisted by Sergio Leone! It was my first opera too. I was nine years old. No doubt my parents went because it was advertised on the local Italian radio station which they listened to.
