Hoyts Ivanhoe Theatre 226 Upper Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe, VIC - Proscenium 1940’s.
Sepia photo - Greg Lynch
The original curtains from 1924 were maroon with gold trimming. From memory some where on it was an Ivanhoe theatre monogram (IT). The curtains photographed in the 1940’s appear darker in this photo because of the sepia contrast. Never-the-less a nice photo of what was an outstanding suburban theatre.
Hoyts Ivanhoe was designed by the architectural firm Kaberry & Chard with a seating capacity of 1,700 and built at a cost of £25,000. The theatre was constructed in a stadium design with a raised section at the rear. The opening night was officiated by the president of the Heidelberg shire Cr W. J. Windsor. In 1931 it was extensively remodeled by the architectural firm of Taylor, Soilleux & Overend, which is pretty much the way it is presented in this photo. The period of this photo is somewhere in the 1940’s
