Although fog can sometimes interfere with the enjoyment of Drive-In screenings, it appears that rain posed a particular difficulty for the Townsville North Ward Drive-In. Some screenings were cancelled on the night, and even in advance - as here, where the decision not to open Saturday was obviously made on the Friday. ‘Note: Owing to the Heavy Rain there will be No Screening at the Drive-In Theatre Tonight….’ Apart from possible electrical wiring problems caused by water, it is likely that another factor would be sound reproduction. While Drive-In patrons today could still hear the soundtrack from in-car speakers under most conditions, the noise of rain beating on a car roof would make it impossible for the Sports Ground attendees to hear sound from the distant near screen speaker.
