Officially opened on Friday 15th November 1940, Townsville’s North Ward Sports Ground Drive-In Theatre was run by Roxy Theatres (Townsville) Pty Ltd, who operated the Roxy ‘hardtop’ nearby. Screenings were held on Saturday nights and continued for nearly two years. Theater manager Joseph Stanley Pollard had approached the Sports Reserve Management Committee with the Drive-In idea on October 28. They had approved the project pending a successful trial and satisfaction of legal requirements.
