In 1905, Charles set up a General Store in Canowindra, after helping establish McDonagh’s of Gunnedah (which in turn was a start-up from George McDonagh’s store in Carroll).
He became well established in Canowindra, and was a local magistrate and registrar of births, deaths, and marriages.

COUNTRY NEWS / DEATH OF MR. C. L. T. , McDONAGH
CANOWINDRA. Friday / The death occurred here after a long illness of Mr. Charles Lindsay Thorne McDonagh. one of the district’s best-known residents. Born at Linton, Victoria he was in his sixty-seventh year.
He came to Canowindra 30 years ago to engage in store keeping. He was prominent in the business life of the community, and took a keen interest in public matters.
At the time of his death he was managing director of C L T McDonagh, Ltd., general storekeepers. His wife, a son, and four daughters survive him.
