Even with 3-D projection and Polaroid viewers, I don’t think patrons could see anything but a “flat” version sitting in a car at ground level of a towering screen.
Depends on the outdoor screen coating used. I remember seeing many classic 3D films as a kid at a big outdoor drive in and things did pop off the screen in our car and had depth. The outdoor 3D sync projectors needed allot of projection light and a good dark screen lot area for the best 3D effect. No stereo sound at the drive in but a company did make 3 channel Eprad stereo speakers that very few outdoor theatres used.
