As well as live musical backing, the presentation of Paramount’s “Wings” also featured ‘Synchronised Sound Effects in conjunction with Brunswick Panatropes’. These were the first electrically operated record players, first made publicly available just a few years earlier. The ‘Cinema Special’ version used here had two turntables enabling the operator to blend sounds like airplane engines and machine gun fire much in the manner of todays musical Deejay. Later in the season, advertisements revealed that ‘Magnascope’ was also in use. Normal cinemas of this era had screens measuring 20 x 24 feet. At the time of opening, the Regent had a sheet 28 foot square – masked down for general presentations. For major action scenes in “Wings”, special lenses permitted the image to be enlarged to the full screen size, adding to the spectacle.
