Regent Theatre
    1. Thring of Electric Theatres (and J.C. Williamson Theatres) had embarked on many joint cinema ventures with Union Theatres in the early 1920s and there was talk of a ‘Regent’ in George Street by 1923. However, relationships changed when Thring merged Electric Theatres (and associated companies) with Hoyts Pictures in 1926. Although built by the new firm – Hoyts Theatres Ltd., the Regent was actually funded and owned by JCW for the entire 50 years Hoyts operated the venue. Another odd thing about the photograph is that the sign is placed on the George Street properties that were later demolished for the Trocadero next door. (The ‘Troc’ then made way for Hoyts Entertainment Centre - now extended to form Greater Union Theatres Event Cinemas!) Hoyts Regent was actually constructed immediately to the right of the sign.
