Odeon Luxe London Leicester Square 26 Leicester Square, London,
As we can see in this photograph, the Odeon Leicester Square was being constructed to be the ultimate grand cinema at the heart of the Odeon chain; if the traditional Art Deco exterior designs of cinemas constructed in the 1920’s and 1930’s were to entice the masses into the ‘dream palace’, then this new Odeon was designed to entice those even higher in society.
It was, in fact, designed in this way to be the exact opposite of the “traditional” Odeon look, most notably in its black granite and its 120ft tower, and it is these same features which make it stand out in this image, and from the rest of Leicester Square. On top of this, what we cannot see clearly in this picture is that the cinema was also designed to be lit up at night in neon ‘in the tradition of German night architecture’ (Eyles, 2014, 133), so as to be all the more bold and alluring.
