Oxford Twin Drive-In

The Oxford Drive-In opened on April 30, 1954 with Alan Ladd in “Saskatchewan” & Tony Curtis in “Forbidden”. It had a capacity for approximately 1,300 cars. It was twinned in 1961 with one screen on the Oxford side and the other screen on the Auburn side. Closed prior to 1992, when Walmart took the property and constructed their store which opened on August 312, 1993.

An old photograph taken in 1992 shows the sign to read "Worcester Screen/Oxford Screen".
The grounds, at one time, had a "Kiddyland" in addition to the free children’s playground on the lot. Kiddyland was open all day, charging 15 - 20 cents per ride on elaborate attractions. At dusk, Kiddyland would close while the drive-in opened. The kids could then play on the free playground.

I have lots of great memories of that drive-in.

The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in, which is currently occupied by another insidious Walmart.

Here is a 1971 aerial photo of the drive-in, courtesy of HistoricAerials.com.

There are some pictures of the Oxford Twin on its gallery page at Drive-ins.com: http://www.drive-ins.com/pictures/matoxfo001.jpg The theater issued “fog passes” if the dense mist made viewing the show difficult.

First opened as the Oxford Drive-In in August 1955, but its first films were “Saskatchewan” and “Forebidden” but unknown if any short subjects were added. It was twinned in 1961 and became the Oxford Twin Drive-In. It was demolished in late 1992 to make way for the Walmart which opened on August 31, 1993.
