    Oakland’s Parkway Theater may reopen

    OAKLAND, CA Accordng to this article in the San Francisco Chronicle, the currently closed Parkway Theater in Oakland may soon reopen if an offer to the theater’s landlord by a group of midwestern investors is accepted and renovations are made.

    The investors are part of an umbrella group of Midwestern movie theater chains called Motion Picture Heritage, based in Indiana and dedicated to preserving independent community movie houses. The Parkway would be its first venue on the West Coast.

    “The hopes and aspirations of Americana are not found in multiplexes,” said Motion Picture Heritage manager Bill Dever. “It’s found in places like the Parkway.”

    Baltimore’s Rotunda Cinematheque Reopens

    BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore’s Rotunda Cinematheque reopens under new ownership, the Horizons Group. The twin theater will again show first run movies starting today.

    New Jersey-based Horizon Group, the Rotunda’s new owner, will bring first-run films back to the Hampden neighborhood.

    The Rotunda theater, which seats 300, has been closed since late March. Horizon Group purchased the theater May 1, said Ira Miller, managing partner of the theater.

    30 hour straight Star Trek Marathon

    CHARLESTON,SC —The Terrace Hippodrome Widescreen Theater will have its GRAND OPENING Thursday May 7th.

    The first film to play will be the new Star Trek film. The first show is at 7 pm and will then run continuous for 30 hours. The new theater boasts a 74 ft wide screen with all digital sound and amps. Visit the official website for more info.

    “New” US 23 Drive-in Theatre will reopen for the season under new management on May 8

    FLINT, MI — As previously reported, the US 23 Twin Drive-in Theatre will reopen under new management and will open for the season on Friday, May 8. They are making renovations and will soon be adding a third screen. The drive-in is now managed by the Theater Group, Inc. of Farmington Hills, MI and the new manager is Jake Stocker.

    Lincoln Theatre set to open in May!

    COLUMBUS, OH — The restoration project of the Lincoln Theatre is nearly complete. The 574-seat theatre at 769 E. Long St. is completing a 13.5 million renovation and is set to reopen Memorial Day with a free open house from 1-4pm for the neighborhood. The official ribbon cutting ceremony will be May 21st. Performances begin on May 28th @ 8pm, Maurice Hines (dancer, choreographer and resident Artistic Director) pays tribute to Nat King Cole through his song and dance. May 29th @ 8pm, Bobby “Blue” Bland will perform a concert full of his hits. May 30th @ 8pm Opera singer Denyce Graves will perform. May 31st @ 3 & 7pm the Harlem Gospel Choir will perform. The following week the regular season with JAG begins.

    Goochland drive-in theater to open this summer

    HADENSVILLE, VA — A new drive-in is coming to Goochland County.

    John and Kristina Heidel last month received approval from the county to move forward with the Goochland Drive-In Theater, to be located on 10 acres in Hadensville off Interstate 64.

    “It’s been a dream for a lot of years, and we just finally decided to go for it,” said John Heidel, 39, who recently sold his dry-cleaning business. “We live in Goochland and we like the rural nature and the culture here, and driving is part of rural America. We thought this would be in keeping with the character.”

    Arcata Theatre returns

    ARCATA, CA — The Arcata Theatre Lounge is ready to open after a five year renovation.

    “I can’t believe it’s finally here, I am so amazed,” said owner Lara Cox. Rather than showing new releases and blockbusters, the theater is taking the route of showing more artistic and avant-garde films. “There is not really a venue like this in the area,” said Mike Sargent, the head of cinema booking and advertising.

    “We are not here to showcase blockbusters. We are looking to show more art films, documentaries and independent films,” said Sargent.

  • New chapter for Majestic?

    STREATOR, IL — After struggling recently, the Majestic Theatre closed its doors last weekend. With possible new owners, it could be back open soon.

    Kyle Mitchell, who ran the theater with his wife, Cindy, said Monday the theater’s owner, Tim Burke, said he is bringing in new people from Pennsylvania to operate the theater and told the Mitchells to close by April 1, so the new operators will be in place before summer. Burke could not be reached for more information.

    The show’s over at Ceres' drive-in movie theater

    CERES, CA — After a year in limbo, it finally looks like the Ceres Drive-In won’t be opening again.

    The era of the drive-in theater is over, and it’s not coming back. At least not to Ceres.

    Owners of the Ceres Theatre & Flea Market — the region’s last drive-in — have confirmed that the show will not go on.

    They’ve put the property up for sale, asking $2.5 million for the 14-acre “industrial” site.
