The following is Part 49 in an ongoing, semi-regular series of retrospectives on CINERAMA, the legendary motion picture process that kicked off the widescreen revolution. The series focuses on providing a market-by-market historical record of when and where Cinerama and its multi-panel clones were exhibited. These easy-to-reference articles serve to provide nostalgia to those who experienced the Cinerama presentations when they were new and to honor the movie palaces in which the memorable screenings took place.

AMPAS announces outdoor summer movie series
HOLLYWOOD, CA — The outdoor theatre announced last year to be operated by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will open next month with “Casablanca” on June 15th. Patrons pay $5 and should bring blankets and low chairs.

Magnificent movie houses of 1920s remembered during Memphis Heritage program
MEMPHIS, TN — In honor of National Preservation Month, Memphis is holding some lectures on the area’s movie palaces. Local collector Vincent Astor will have his theater memorabilia on display at the home of the talks, Howard Hall.

2012 CAPA Summer Movie Series
COLUMBUS, OH — The longest running classic-film series in the country is returning to the Ohio Theatre this June when CAPA returns. Clark Wilson will guest on organ in the diverse series of landmark films.

Cactus Theater has become crown jewel of preservation
LUBBOCK, TX — The venerable Cactus Theater will be celebrated this month as a preservation icon. The 1938 theatre has been a live performance venue for almost 20 years and will be featured in Texas' Month of Preservation.

Studio 35 re-opens
COLUMBUS, OH — The fan favorite Studio 35 reopened just in time for “The Avengers” and locals are already raving about it. They’ve completely redone the concession area and lobby to make it more welcoming and now offer one of the best beer selections in town. The theatre has had numerous enhancements as well.

Theaters discuss satellite delivery
LAS VEGAS, NV — One of the biggest developments to arise from CinemaCon the other week was a discussion over theaters potentially receiving films on satellite. A Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition of major studios and theater chains are testing it out and expect to start rolling it out next year.

Cablevision looking to sell Clearview chain
NEW YORK, NY — The stumbling Northeast cable company Cablevision is looking to unload one of its valuable assets, Clearview Cinemas, as it struggles with subscriber numbers dipping. Clearview, a collection of mostly neighborhood cinemas, is home to the world-famous Ziegfeld Theatre in Manhattan.
