Capitol Theater : The vaudeville theater that time forgot

Hi, my name is Larry. I own two vaudeville theaters in Butler, PA. The Lyric Theatre, opened in 1908, now houses the main bar and dining areas of my restaurant: The Brick House. You can view it as it looks now at my website. Sorry, the stage and other elements were long gone by the time I arrived to weld my hammer and paint brush.

But, I have a secret. Along side the Lyric Theater was The Capitol Theater. And it’s still there!!! It sits on the second floor in “the land that time forgot”. That’s what I call it anyway. Closed in the early 1950’s, it was saved by The Eat ‘n Park Corp. – A Pittsburgh area chain restaurant. They built a downtown Butler location in the early 70’s on the first floor of the Capitol Theater building, carefully preserving the theater above.

The Capitol is in disrepair but I am currently seeking funding to restore it to its original splendor. There are even dressing rooms where the vaudeville actors must have changed! So while I respect that you have the Butler Theatre listed (I can send you pics) I have the last remaining vaudeville theater in the area. More in the near future.

  • Hollywood Studio Theatres chain abruptly closes theatres

Update: Please note that this story was NOT submitted by Chakeres Theatres, Inc. (The post below is modified from an earlier submission.)

COLUMBUS, OH — Hollywood Studio Theatres might be no more. They closed Brice Mall Dollar Cinema 8. And now it looks like Dollar Cinema Westland 8 (a former General Cinema), the Westerville 8 (a former Silver Cinemas Discount House) which Hollywood uses as a first run cinema and the Delaware Square 5 (a former Regal Cinema and last operated prior to Hollywood Studio by an out of business chain called Classic Theatres, which was also based out of Columbus).

The official website lists times for last week June 6-12 but all phone numbers are disconnected. Westerville recording has times for June 6-12 but the office number is disconnected. Coshocton Twin in Coshocton, OH seems to still be open.

  • Eye Pay You Take It Ticket Box Machine circa 1941

    Hello,

I am looking for information on the Eye Pay You Take It Ticket Box machine that was in theaters in the 1940’s. The machine dispensed gold tokens and was a checking device for theater admissions. It was produced by EyePay Inc. Chicago, IL. I have not been successful in finding a lot of information on this device. I would appreciate any help or info.

    Thanks!

    RIP Stan Winston

As many of you know, Stan Winston, one of the fathers of pre-CGI special effects, passed away yesterday of cancer. He was 62 years old. His legacy, however, will live on in the studio he helped create for which many sfx movies were made. May Stan Winston Studio live on in the CGI era with its famous makeup effects.

  • How modern theaters show classic movies

Hi, I’m new to this forum, Great site with a ton of information, I know I’m not the first to have this idea and most likley there are people out there doing this but, what does it take to have a modern movie theater and show only classic or older movies? This has been a dream of mine for awhile now, I collect vintage movie posters and reels and other movie related stuff, could not find any info on this.

    Thanks,
    John

    Last night at Rialto

RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ — Here’s a touching account of the final night screening of “Cinema Paradiso” at the closing night of the Rialto Theatre.

Then, as my car slowed in anticipation of a traffic light, I could see the letters — those six red letters, evenly separated and against a yellow backdrop, which brought back the memories like a biblical flood.

    RIALTO

As I passed the movie theater that has forever influenced my life, I could see the title of the movie I had come to see up on the marquee: “Cinema Paradiso,” an Italian fable about the magic of movies and the lasting presence of friendship.

  • Old Town Theatre owner requests $6M loan

WICHITA, KS — The owner of the Old Town Theatre is looking for help from the city in order for the theatre to keep going.

Bill Warren is asking the Wichita City Council for a $6 million low-interest loan and a reduction of parking fees in order to keep his Old Town theater open.

According to an analysis by the city’s staff, “The Old Town Theatre is a popular destination in Old Town and serves as a major attraction to bring patrons to the Old Town area. However, its relatively small size, compared to norms in the movie theater industry, has created negative economies of scale that have resulted in significant financial losses during the theater’s first five years of operation.”
