    As economy dives, Hollywood thrives

An Associated Press piece suggests that there’s a correlation with a poor economy and high moviegoing numbers.

It was true during the Depression, when Americans managed to scrape together nickels and dimes for an escape to the movies. And as the prospect of another recession looms, studio executives say this time is no different.

Even as evidence mounts that people are tightening up on other expenses, movie attendance this year has been running ahead of 2007 numbers — welcome news at ShoWest, the annual convention of theater owners, which opens here Tuesday.

Domestic box-office revenues went up in five of the past seven recession years dating back to the 1960s, according to research compiled by the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Plan for Regal, AMC, Cinemark to go all digital

Three exhibitor chains are negotiating a financing plan to go all digital.

Several theater chains and studios are nearing an estimated $1.1 billion financing deal to deploy in cinemas digital technology that promises to boost attendance and save Hollywood billions of dollars in annual print and delivery costs, industry officials said on Sunday.

“We’re hopeful that in the second quarter we will get it all arranged,” said Travis Reid, chief executive of Digital Cinema Implementation Partners. DCIP is wholly owned by theater chains Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings Inc and AMC Entertainment Inc, which collectively operate over 14,000 screens.

  • Local projectionist shares memories

DAGSBORO, DE — Charles W. Thorns has been showing films for over fifty years and as resident projectionist at the Clayton Theatre, he’s shared his passion as well.

Sitting in the little projectionist booth at the Clayton Theatre — and more than 10 others over the years — he has virtually memorized the dialog for hundreds of films.

It’s a dying art, he said, because while other larger theaters run a platter system — meaning a projectionist flips a switch to start the movie — he learns the films while he is watching. His attention is necessary as a little dot in the left hand corner of every film signals him to change projectors in moments.

  • Have a seat? We’d like two!

H-B Woodlawn is an alternative school in Arlington, VA. H-B is consistently ranks one of the best public high schools in the country. In 2006 and 2007 H-B ranked 13th; in 2005, 5th; and in 2003, 10th. H-B has a prolific, student-run theatre program which produces 8 to 12 productions each year, almost all of which are directed and produced by students. The 2007-2008 show schedule includes: Sister Mary Ignatius, No Exit, Lost in Yonkers, One-Act Play Festival, Urinetown, Macbeth, As Bees in Honey Drown, Boys and Ghouls Together, Holes, and the 24-Hour Play Festival.

Unsafe rigging above the stage needs to be replaced. Most of the wiring is 50 years old. Students have been shocked. The lighting dimmer rack only holds 26 lights. The spotlights at the back of the auditorium are attached to balcony railings. The wooden seating in the school’s auditorium is fifty years old and is literally falling apart; seats have fallen out from under people and are visibly cracked; some seats are missing; several rows of seats have been removed because they were not salvageable; and, some rows of seats are being pieced together by students. WE NEED 475 SEATS, NEW OR USED! The estimated cost is at least $49,100 for new seats. Bake sales are presented at each theatrical event. T-shirts, sweatshirts, and mugs are being offered for sale. Raffles and other fundraising events are being sponsored by the Drama Boosters to raise additional money. We are trying everything. Please let us know if you can be of help, or have any ideas to get us any closer to our goals.

    Help on theater info

    Hi everyone,

I’m currently a projectionist at a local movie theater in Memphis, TN. I love my job but since everything is going digital, I don’t know if I’m going to have a job.

I really would love to own my own theatre but I don’t know where to start. I’d even be co-owner of a theatre if anyone knows anyone in the Tennessee area who wants to go in on it.

    Please contact me.
    Thanks
