Mt. Vernon’s Granada Theater celebrates 70th anniversary

MT. VERNON, IL — Next week, the historic Granada Theater celebrates its 70th.

For three days, it will be bright lights in a little city with a number of events celebrating the legacy and long anticipated comeback of the historic Granada Theater.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the grand old Granada Theater which opened in December of 1937 and to commemorate the occasion, Granada Center of the Performing Arts board member David Lister said the community is invited to come together and enjoy all the theater has to offer starting on December 14, 2007.

The restored marquee will be lit for the first time in several years and marks an important milestone in the renovation of the theater. A time capsule buried under the marquee will also be opened. It is said to contain artifacts dating from the 1930s to the 1980s. The capsule “treasures” will be on display at a variety of events to raise money for the ongoing restoration and then reburied for future generations.

A complete rundown of events for the celebration can be found in this article at the morning Sentinel web site.

    Wanted: Paramount/Publix Usher Uniform Photo

I am looking to re-create an usher uniform in the style used by Paramount/Publix theatres from the late 1920s/early 1930s. Does anyone have a photo of such a uniform? If you are willing to sell an actual period uniform or part thereof from any theatre(not limited to Paramount), I would be interested in that as well. Thanks!

  • The CLOVERFIELD movie poster.

People, I’d like your opinion on this – there is a movie called CLOVERFIELD to be released on January 18, 2008. From what I can make out from the trailer, it is about a monster that destroys New York City and is filmed from the point of view of an amateur film maker (a'la Blair Witch Project).

The movie poster for this depicts a headless Statue of Liberty in the foreground and a shot of downtown Manhattan in smoke and in ruins (forgive my computer ignorance, but I did not know how to attach a shot of the poster for this commentary. Search the web and I’m sure you’ll find it easily).

In my opinion, I find this poster incredibly offensive and insensitive to not only those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, but also to the surviving family members who must live with the horror of that day for the rest of their lives.

Grand Theater seeks grant for restoration project

PARIS, TX — In order to save the Grand Theater, citizens are taking a different route than usual by getting a grant.

The City of Paris is seeking a $200,000 environmental Protection Agency grant to be matched with $40,000 for the Grand Theater Restoration project. The dilapidated and abandoned Grand Theater, long a landmark in downtown Paris is being considered to be restored because of its historical value.

The restoration project grant is being sought from the Ark-Tex council of Governments board of directors. The twinned theater is closed but the marquee and colorful vertical sign remains intact.

The theater opened in 1937 and was designed by architect Jake Elder. It originally seated 809 people and had the largest fly-loft west of the Mississippi. It was twinned sometime prior to its closing in 1996 after a new Theater was built in the city. Sometime later the already deteriorating Grand’s property owners abandoned the building. Roof-top openings allowed water to seep in causing water damage and pigeon infestation; peeling paint and crumbling ceiling tiles make the building a health hazard. There is flooding in the basement and a crack along the outside of the north wall.

An article on the intial steps to restore the theater can be found at the Paris News.

  • Behind the Delijani Empire

LOS ANGELES, CA — A story chronicles the history of theater ownership in the Los Angeles Delijani Family along with some plans for the future.

Like most property owners along the corridor, the Delijanis prefer to keep a low profile. Nonetheless, their controversial story is tightly woven into the fabric of Broadway and its hoped-for rebound. Since his father acquired the Los Angeles Theatre 20 years ago, Michael Delijani has continued the preservation effort and purchased three other theaters: the State at 703 S. Broadway, the Palace at 630 S. Broadway and the Tower at 802 S. Broadway.

Delijani’s Delson Investment Company has spent millions to acquire the theaters, though the lion’s share of his attention when it comes to renovations has centered on the Los Angeles Theatre, arguably Downtown’s most lavish.

New owners seek to restore Reeves Theater

ELKIN, NC — The long dormant Reeves Theater is looking to restore and reopened after 20 years and much damage.

Elkin is working to bring back its art-deco Reeves Theater, a 1940s movie house with a facade in four shades of blue with orange trim. It once lit Main Street with a large neon sign, but since the mid-1980s, has stood dark. Water damage ruined most of the interior. And though a group of investors bought it in 1998, plans to restore it never materialized.

In 1941, Dr. W.B. Reeves, a local eye doctor, built the 700-seat theater. People walked past a soda shop inside before taking their seats to watch newsreels, Rita Hayworth movies and Donald Duck cartoons. Admission was 33 cents.

An article on the struggle to save and restore this theater can be found on the Winston-Salem Journal website along with 17 photos of the heavily damaged interior.
