    Questions on United Artists theatre?

DARIEN, CT — Was curious if anybody has information on the United Artists Theatre. Noticed it listed in the UA Westchester County listings as eastern Connecticut’s exclusive run of “Airport” in May of 1970. Unusual, as Stamford theaters usually did the exclusive area engagements in Fairfield County back then.

Was it a 1960’s shopping center theater or an older house from way back?

    Thank You Much.

Where are they now? - Carthay Circle Theatre

It’s so hard for me to look at this picture and not think about all those great memories I’ve had in that building. Walking down from Wilshire on those sunny days to bask in its hollow steel interior. Taking that orange bus over to revel in its magnificent architecture. One almost wonders what’s the holdup in getting a trendy restaurant to open up next store so you can hit two birds with the same stone. It makes sense. An urban slice of paradise? For sure.

Wait a second. I’ve never walked inside this building for pleasure. In fact, I don’t have a single positive memory of this place. In truth, no sadder sight exists on all the streets of Los Angeles. That ugly box-like monstrosity you see right there was built right over the ruins of arguably the city’s greatest showplace of all, the Carthay Circle Theatre.

It’s hard to grasp the extent of this theatre’s popularity with so many others stealing the spotlight in town. Maybe if the theaters still standing in Westwood, Hollywood, and Downtown didn’t exist, more attention would be given to this particular one. It didn’t take long for me to hear about it though. Ask anyone that’s been around Los Angeles longer than forty years what the greatest theater loss was and the answer undoubtedly turns to this. You have to understand that the Carthay Circle had significantly more world premieres than even Grauman’s Chinese. With the light atop beaming for miles, it cast quite a shadow in a town with more than one movie palace.

“The world’s greatest films were shown here before (being) released to other theaters,” longtime Carthay Circle neighborhood resident Elizabeth Polim said. “After a film had a long session at Carthay other theatres then were given an opportunity to show these films. Films selected for Cathay were (shown there for) the first time.”

  • Future still uncertain for Boyd

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Live Nation is still mulling over their options for the vacant Boyd Theatre. Obviously, a return to its former glory as a movie palace would be great, but other options are on the table.

The owners of the Boyd, mothballed since 2002, confirmed last week that they were weighing its conversion into a House of Blues, a pop-music venue.

“The two most likely scenarios are a House of Blues or a sale, and we’re open to other options,” said John Vlautin, a spokesman for concert promoter Live Nation, owner of House of Blues, by phone from Beverly Hills, Calif. In January, Live Nation listed the property with CB Richard Ellis. Neither would discuss the asking price.

  • Chiltern Cinema up for Grade II listing

BEACONSFIELD, UK — The Chiltern Cinema, former Picture House is up for a Grade II listing. This is after a recent scare of developers to demolish the cinema to make way for a new block of flats (haven’t we seen that all before?). The Grade II listing would ensure that the Cinema continues its life as a preserved building of architectural interest.

Last Curtain for doomed Odeon Cinema Manchester

MANCHESTER, UK — Manchester Historian Eddy Rhead has failed in his attempt to get the last picture palace in Manchester UK listed under the UK’s Historical buildings register. Developers now have the green light to pull down the historic theatre and replace it with a 14 story office block. The Odeon started life as one of a handful of Paramount Pictures opulant UK cinemas.

The full story and some then and now pictures go to theManchester Evening News

  • Meridian Theatres

    Hello Again.

I’d like to thank everyone who gave input on my previous post “Village Entertainment vs. Classic Cinemas.” Now I have another topic that I’d like input on.

I vaguely remember about 10 years ago that there was a cinema chain in the Metropolitan Chicago area called Meridian Theatres. As I recall, the chain did not last long at all. Could my fellow Cinema Treasures fans enlighten me on the following:

  • Wanted: 30 Theater Seats

I’m looking for 30 theater seats for a church theater room. Any located in Kansas or neighboring states would be a plus! If you have any available or know of any, please contact me via email at .

    Thanks!
