Is the screen that is still there, the original screen?
Opened on 27/3/1947 with “The pirates of Monterey”. Opened with two screens on 12/4/1957 with “The wings of eagles” and “The fastest gun in the west”.
Two screens opening on April 12th, 1957. Grand opening ad posted.

The city left room to hold community movie nights using the restored main screen.
Looks like in the last photo, they uncovered some glass blocks that must have been painted over at the very top of the structure. Glad to see it’ll look as it was originally intended.
The screentower being restored in April 2011.

I was in San Antonio 1/20/2010 and heard on the radio the last of the concession stand will be demo'ed this week. Marquee will remain. Construction will start next week on a library.

Yes, a number of Missions in Texas…..not just Mission Control!
There are a number of Missions that served the people of the area in the 1700’s. The Alamo is one of them. San Antonio is rich in it’s Spanish heritage.

I wonder if the name “mission” had anything to do with the fact the theatre is in Texas and the State where the City of Houston and Mission Control are located?

This theatre with the 4 screens was quite unusual. Loved the night photo with the lighted glass and stars above in a Texas sky.

SHAME!! I was just asking about this on another part of the site (link below). So is it gone? SO many good memories there, and i’m only in my early 20’s. This truly saddens me. I wish there was something we could have done. I would have loved to go there regularly, but it became increasingly difficult as I live on the far Northside of San Antonio and you all know of the current gas/economical downward spiral…
Having said that, I guess it’s understandable. RIP!
I now go to the Paladium at The Rim off La Cantera as it is much closer to home, and while it is an extremely nice theatre, it’s not quite as special as The Mission Drive-In was; but then again, not many things are these days!
