November 11th, 1926 grand opening ad posted.
Cinecommcentre there is still all the 35mm stuff there. I haven’t looked in that cabinet in 5 years which is the last time we ran 35mm. Im not sure about books. As I said I haven’t been into the cabinet in years. No need to now that the use the Digital projector exclusively.
The entire complex is called Count Basie Center for the Arts. The original main auditorium is referred to as Hackensack Medical Center Theatre. More people know it as Count Basie theater than HMCT.
The website says Count Basie Center for the Arts.
It was renamed in 2018, but seems like it’s the name of the main auditorium, but the new name is also on the marquee as well now, in smaller lettering.

The website does not refer to a health provider. I checked photos via google of the marquee, and I don’t see the health provider name there either. Count Basie, that I see.
9 films for Awards season! From Jan 21 thru Feb 6. One time screenings of each at 7 PM, check website. Toy Story 4, Honeyland, American Factory, Judy, Marriage Story, Parasite,The Lighthouse, The Two Popes, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I was told a little more than 775 people for last nights second night showing.
The movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” sold out every seat last night here! 2nd screening tonight, with many seats already sold out. The theater has 7.1 surround sound so should be a marvelous experience.
Never mind, I found the information in the article posted above, to wit:
Let’s not forget that the original motion-picture house, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was dubbed the State Theater during its construction — that name is still visible in stone above the marquee — but opened in 1926 as the Carlton Theatre, and was rebranded yet again as the Monmouth Arts Center, the name given upon reopening after a three-year shutdown in the 1970s.
The name State appears on the front of the building, near the top. Was this house ever called the State?

Nice name for a theater. Glad that this theater has been around while others like the Fox and Oritani, are gone.

Here’s an article from today’s Asbury Park Press about yesterday’s ground breaking ceremony for a $23 million expansion of the Basie, which will include second performance space located in a new Arts and Education Building adjacent to the theatre. This pretty much doubles the size of the performing arts center. A nice addition to the Basie, which celebrates its 91st anniversary as a theatre in 7 weeks. The article includes a short video and slide show of the ceremony and plans.
I highly doubt it HowardBHaas. As the house projectionist I can almost guarentee they with be digital or blu ray. Too much money to ship the film and pay me to inspect them. With the other format all I do is start them. I dont even load them. Yup, welcome to the world of digital.
Are the Star Trek movies in Feb 35mm?
Handsome ceiling and lighting. Wall details nice too. All first class.
No problem walterk. And thank you for all your doing with the Ritz. Hope to see you soon.
I was a guest of Basie projectionist Mark Pusillo (aka markp) for a double bill while in the area last month. I’ve just uploaded a couple of the photos I took that afternoon. Wonderful well kept venue I’d been waiting years for a chance to visit. Thanks again, Mark.
The 35mm print of “Interstellar” looked and sounded FANTASTIC tonight. And of course all my changeovers were flawless. I havent lost a step in 35 years.
I found mention of the opening of the Carlton in the November 27, 1926 issue of the Motion Picture News giving the date as November 11, 1926. This was the 30th theatre in the Walter Reade chain, all but one or two of them in New Jersey. According to the mention, Keith-Albee vaudeville, feature films and short subjects formed the house policy for presentations. I hope the Basie has a film presentation the next time I’m visiting relatives in the area, this looks like a great venue to experience. Hopefully it will be a night they fire up the 35mm projectors.
Looking forward to “2001” tonight at the Count Basie Theatre. It’ll be my first time there. Hope the screen is as big as it looks from the photos of the stage curtains.
New Christie digital projector installed as of early sept. We have kept the 2 35mm projectors also.
