I meant Screen 10 was turned into a IMAX on June 5, 2015 two weeks after they closed down the old IMAX theater across the Mall. First IMAX movie they played was San Andreas. Sorry for my grammar in my last comment.

This theater certainly has changed. I remember when it used to be a Loew’s and then an AMC/Loew’s. I remember this place used to have an arcade and multiple food stands. But now, it’s simply an AMC with awesome recliner seats, Coke Freestyle machines, and the IMAX theater is inside the AMC, sort of like Garden State Plaza. Still love coming here!
Construction work was in the final touches on this theater 20 years ago this year before its grand opening in April 3rd.
Soon to be surpassed by the AMC Empire 25 2 years later. I remember reading about it in the local paper back in high school.
This opened on April 3rd, 1998 as the Tri-State Area s largest movie theatre. Its grand opening ad can be found in the photo section for this cinema.
This theater was ahead of its time when it opened in 98 and had some competition. Now it has a new one in the name of Regal.
While I certainly appreciate the recent modifications, such as reclining chairs, there are other aspects that are wanting. We went to see the new Star Wars film a week ago, and it was a very unpleasant experience – the sound levels, especially during the commercials (too many of those for years!) and Coming Attractions were deafening, and during the film itself were ridiculously loud. During the promos, the sound was so loud that the speakers were distorting. I complained to the service desk but nothing was done. I certainly like the idea of the recliners and being able to reserve a specific seat, but I like my hearing too. I’m planning on going to the Nanuet Regal in the future – during my visits there I felt more like a guest than a revenue source.
I worked at City Center for a short time after the retrofit. They did a quality job. Moved the screen up about 30 feet closer and lost 120 seats, but it was nice. Havent been there in 10 years since I left.
I wouldn’t waste time on the “new” IMAX screen here – Garden State and City Center have decent IMAX retrofits. Clifton Commons is the worst – a downright scam. This one does have a big screen but awkward viewing angles – – between the light directly above the screen and the exit slights that backlight the screen, it’s baffling how IMAX could certify this auditorium. AMC should be embarrassed by both this screen and Clifton Commons…if only they cared about quality.
Does anyone know the dimensions of the new digital IMAX here? On online ticketing it looks like only 26 seats wide, however, it shows the screen way, way wider than the seating. If that is to scale is it as wide as the old true IMAX only just not as tall now or is it also a lot less wide? Is it any bigger than the typical digital IMAX screen? Or just the same (or even smaller, going by only 26 seats across)?
Jeez what a sick joke. I can’t believe they shut down the true giant IMAX here right before SW? What on Earth were they thinking! People would driven for miles to see it on that screen. I was. Was so excited to finally see a SW at the start on a true, giant IMAX screen and they close it! Heck, if I’m driving to Palisades to see it on this crappy joke of a new IMAX. It’s far worse and even smaller than the one 10 minutes away from me. Man I was finaly going to see it in real IMAX and they put in this atrocious junk of a screen and kill the amazing one. The only one without the hideous expense and mess of getting into Manhattan.
I’ve been here a few times since the renovations – the restrooms largely look the same and AMC changed the ticketing counters to integrate more self-service machines (interestingly enough they only have two cash/pass registers open – the rest are credit only).
20 theaters have the second generation recliners – quite comfortable but the footrests don’t fully extend nor do the backs recline that far – still an improvement over the previous seating.
The IMAX however is terrible – I saw Everest on Friday night in 3D – they have the same style of seating as the recliners except they don’t recline – also there’s limited foot room (and you can’t place your feet under your seat – they’ve padded that part for some reason). The retrofit screen is about half the size of the previous IMAX and lacks the immersive view even three rows from the screen (where I eventually moved). The most annoying feature was a light directly above the screen that remained on, washing out the dark scenes. I wrote to IMAX and received a quick response – I hope the matter is corrected because the 3D was virtually useless. I tend to think it has more to do with AMC rather than IMAX – AMC’s presentation standards are downright atrocious (they’re the leader in leaving the Real D filters on 2D shows).
i agree on palisades parking. The imax was my second favorite imax that was near an AMC/Loews theater in the New York area. it’s been 15 years since i went there….recently walked by there when Inception played there. RIP real imax at palisades…
If AMC is decreasing the seating here with recliners, the new Regal in Nanuet must be cutting into there grosses. Also the Palisades is horrible with trying to park especially at the theater level.

The only REAL theatre in Rockland is the Historic Movie Palace built in 1924 The Lafayette in Suffern. All others in rockland are just screening rooms of different sizes with a screen and seats
AMC assumed operations of the IMAX Theater in the complex in February.
On a side note Re: Regal – not sure what their plans are but they also announced they’ll be operating a luxury theater at Paramus Park. This theater seems a little less crowed but not hurting for business – I think both mall serve slightly different audiences with Nanuet ultimately a quicker, less stressful experience (at least parking). Bow Tie changed the focus on New City on art/indie films, although unfortunately a lot of the bigger titles from Fox Searchlight and Sony Classics play both at Bow Tie and Loews – occasionally a film will play at all 3 Rockland County theaters.
Regal is opening a new 12 screen theater down the road at the Nanuet Mall. It would make sense for Regal to take over this theater and decrease the number of screens.
AMC has had issues dealing with mall owner Pyramid Management in the past (at Walden Galleria in Buffalo), and Regal operates a theatre at virtually every other Pyramid property.
Heard from a Regal manager that they are taking over this location. Don’t know when this may occur or why AMC might be leaving.
Wow, and to think I spent the night there waiting in line to buy tickets for Star Wars Episode 1….
Some people think that the mall that the theater is in is sinking due to the ground. I hope it doesn’t collapse!!!
