AMC Theaters, the world’s largest theater operator, said Tuesday that it expects to have 97-98% of its theaters worldwide reopened by mid-July. The National Association of Theater Owners, the trade group that represents exhibitors, expects some 90-95% of cinemas around the world will be opened by mid-July.(From NY Daily News today).
There is no designated smoking area, you must go outside. They have renovated (if you can call it that) the basement lounge, getting rid of the old broken theater seats and replacing them with some cheap tables and chairs. They also fixed/ replaced some broken seats in the 2 small theaters.Let’s be thankful for small mercies.
I’m quite sure I saw “The Last Wave” at this theatre (it premiered here and at The Paramount). However I recall no details about that original location.
over9 I did notice the lighting change in the balcony, and also in the small theater right off the lobby where they usually have TBS showing on the screen.
I was there yesterday between 10am and 1pm and there was a good size crowd. The rumor is the deal to sell the theatre fell thru, and it will be open for the forseeable future. Don’t want to make any comments that are inappropriate for this forum.
Patrons now say it will be out of business by the end of the month. Employees are saying June, but the audience flow is down to a trickle. Maybe not even covering operating costs.
I stopped in today, one of the regulars told me it has been sold and they expect to close the deal in July at the latest. So unless the deal falls through it will be curtains by this summer.
I was here for the second time today,this time to see “Irrational Man”(if you like Woody Allen it’s his best in years).Last time,my movie was playing in one of the basement theatres, today I was sent upstairs to a magnificently restored auditorium. The movie was not centered correctly on the screen causing a brief interruption during which the house lights were raised. I didn’t mind because it gave me time to admire the theatre and it’s design. Upon leaving I noticed the marquee stated “Historic Auditorium Now Re-opened”. I recommend a visit to any fellow movie theatre enthusiasts.Also the Orville Redenbacher popcorn was fantastic.
I was on the commercial strip today of which the Paramount was once a part. There are many new businesses opening in long-shuttered buildings, as well as new ones that have been built. A brand new municipal parking lot is nearing completion adjacent to a McDonalds in the nearby area. To know that the restored theatre whatever it’s intended function would have been a part of this is truly a shame.From the info we have it was the city’s anti small business practices that caused the restoration to prematurely end.
On my third visit yesterday I had more time to look around. I had not realized as you ride the escalators to the upper floors there is a brick wall to your left. This is the side outer wall of the original theatre building which is now the lobby. The imprint of a former fire escape is clearly visible. The theatre is truly amazing and is kept very clean. The ticket price is up to $14.50 but luckily I had an AMC gift card.

I believe part of the building is landmarked and cannot be demolished. It can be remodeled as far as I know.
A friend told me the theatre is being cleaned out. The end of an era.

It is open Sun-Thu 11am-10pm Fri-Sat 11am-12 midnight. $12 admission. Busiest days Friday thru Sunday.

Pretty sure this was where I saw Star Trek – The Motion Picture in ‘79. I know I visited several times in my youth.

The theatre at Hylan and Ebbitts was actually the Rae Twin.
The theatre is still open…for now.
