Get your facts straight milanp and stop misleading readers to the site. Besides, I worked for Famous Players and I could confirm its my former employer who shut down the Uptown. Sounds too “P.C.” to be honest eh?
Well, Cineplex shut down Yum! Brands and NY Files mostly for money reasons. Cineplex don’t want to pay franchising fees and they have a good relationship with Pizza Pizza. The ingredients in their pizzas are inexpensive.
If you go to essentials page and you will find the showtime in a P.D.F. file. Cineplex would probably replace the “traditional” Famous Players with newer Cineplex Odeons, Silvercities and Galaxies, it is odd they choose the Famous Players brand for this theatre. Recently, there is a talk of a big box development in Chatham which includes a new cinema. Here is the link to the article: http://www.ckdp.ca/new-cinema-coming-to-chatham
The theatre maybe serves as a temporary location for Cineplex in Chatham. The developer didn’t reveal the name of the operator.
I think the Allied theatre chain were made up of independent owners that were against bigger guys like Odeon and Famous Players. I don’t know what happen to them either.
Jon: There are always be human error and your comment is nothing but exaggeration in my opinion. If that is the case, the theatre management would have hand out free passes after each show and long line ups at guest services people complaining about the poor presentation. But I have to admit, Scotiabank Theatre have long been neglected by Cineplex and Famous Players.
Dumb idea, violating someone’s privacy e.g. a paying customer. Also the cinema chain forcing its employees doing something that they are not comfortable with. The best to deal with the problem is send an usher to check in the theatre once in a while without violating someone’s privacy.
@Kuckyjay: Your friend maybe right on the Upper James cinemas converting into an arcade/entertainment complex. Recently, Cineplex have announced their Silvercity Newmarket location will have 3 of its theatres turn into a giant arcade center called “Xscape”. Here is the press release. www.au.sys-con.com/node/922858
Didn’t the Coliseum Calgary was renamed Studio 10 by Empire? As far as I know one of the reason Cineplex bought Famous Players besides making themselves bigger was the Silvercity brand because they are ubiquitous and well known. Since Coliseum along with the Colossus are smaller brands within FP, Cineplex sold the Calgary location. Since Cineplex have too much brands already, the Silvercity name is the third active brand along with Cineplex Odeon and Galaxy Cinemas. I highly doubt Cineplex will be using the Coliseum and Colossus brands in the future since there are smaller number of locations of them. Cineplex still keeping the old names on the theatres but not using their brands in future projects, since they are already well known.
@Chad, Empire Theatres is the second largest theatre chain after Cineplex which bought Famous Players. I won’t consider them an “independent”. Check empireco.ca for example. The owners of Sobey’s and Price Choppers also own Empire Theatres. Empire Theatres also own some former Silvercities and Cineplex Odeons across Canada.
There is a possibility that A.M.C. maybe struggling against the Cineplex across the highway since the Colossus got the Imax and UltraA.V.X.
Cineplex just signed a short term lease for the theatre: www.bclocalnews.com/richmond_southdelta/richmondreview/news/111411249.html?mobile=true
Hopefully, the mall would get a newer Cineplex Odeon branded theatre.
Cineplex announced a Galaxy cinemas will be built in the big box development in Chatham.

As it turns out that Famous Players Chatham is indeed temporary location for Cineplex.
“Sad, but typical of those cynical, pretentious, p.c.-to-a-fault Canucks.” Yeah, becoming an American citizen will make me a saint.

Scotiabank Theatre is getting an Ultra Avx, not to get outdone by AMC.

The theater will have both ETX & digital Imax, it says on their website.
This AMC is getting an Imax. Don’t know how the future hold for Scotiabank Theatre.
Yes, the cinemas were all rebuilt from scratch.

Probably Empire want the opening to be low key but here is the link to the new theatre:

The theatre’s status should be closed since it was replaced by a newer and bigger multiplex nearby.

John, if you check beverlycenter13.com and you will find the term of use page have the address of Rave Motion Pictures on it.
Sorry, never mind the employee part since they are private security guards not some teenage employee.

Good question Tim, there is a possibility of high rent was the reason Coliseum Calgary being sold to Empire.

In my opinion, the Alamo Drafthouse looks more practical then the Gold Class Cinemas because it is just a gimmick catering to the rich.
