The Conservatory does Broadway theatre tours Saturday mornings. I’ve wanted to go for ages, the new plans are going to get me down there sooner rather than later.
Whether or not they do it well, and in the best interests of the theatres is for us all to find out. It seems that, in my experience, investors and new owners go into renovations with greater expectations than are necessary (or even realistic, in some cases) and then end up failing. My fingers are crossed.
I worked at the Cove Theatre, also run by Landmark, until its closing in January 2003. We were given 3 months notice, but unlike your theatre we were on a month to month lease. I feel for those, like you, who get such short notice and especially others who I have known that did not know their theatre was closing until they went to work and there were padlocks on the doors…
I agree with Peter. The platter system — feed arms and rollers specifically — can damage prints. Plus platters require build up/break down of prints onto the platters themselves rather than being wound onto reels. This requires more time and also gives more opportunities for damage to occur.
“I only hope it doesn’t meet the same fate as the Raymond, State and others did up the road.” Exactly. This is really sad news, hopefully it does not become a ghost of what it once was like the Cove Theatre in La Jolla, CA, also operated by Landmark until it closed in 2003.
It does look very much like the interior of the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, though the Ohio (at least since the renovations) does not have the box seats shown in the picture. I can see how it could be incorrectly identified, sorry to not be of any help.
I wish I had taken a photo of this building. It is not in the greatest neighborhood, but when you’re driving down Main it’s impossible to miss as it still looks very much like a theatre.
A photo of the Clinton Theatre can be seen here: View link Last I saw the building was for sale, I was tempted to call and feign interest in buying it so that I could get a look inside, but I chickened out.
MLM— I can’t contribute much, though I would like to give something. This theatre is truly one of my favorites.
A related story— I hung the photo I posted above in an art show I was in a earlier this year, the curator loved the photo so much that I gave it to her to hang in her gallery.

Ron Newman took the words right out of my mouth. The Ohio Theatre in Columbus is #1 with a bullet in my book. And though I don’t think they do movies anymore — though I may be mistaken — the Akron Civic Auditorium is a stunning theatre.
Here are several pictures I took of the Fox Pomona in January 2008:

What a shame.
What a beautiful theatre! So happy to hear it has been brought back to life.

Here’s a picture from a couple days ago, very much like ChrisB’s photos.

The last time I saw it — probably around spring 2006 — it was either medical offices or a medical clinic.

It’s a shame for so many reasons, it’s so sad to see art houses close, especially when they’re housed in a building with such a history.
