Remember on the Honeymooners Ralph Kramden or Alice made reference many times to seeing a movie at The Halsey. And on one of the lost episodes Ralph makes a crack about Trixie appearing there in burlesque.
The above picture is great. I am amazed all the verticals were still there in 1970. New York got rid of most of them by the late 50’s. A shame they lit up the street so well.
I’m surprised he would treat suck classy people with such low regard. But then again I’m sure your language was as proper as it is in the above post. The Midway is fine, the Cinemart gets a totally different upscale crowd.
The Thalia is open but sadly I dont find the programs exciting enough to drive into the city for. The old Thalia used to run everything and anything. I remember a triple bill of Zsa Zsa Gabor in Queen of Outer Space, Plan 9 from Outer Space and the one with Beverly Garland where the creature looked like a giant Asparagus, damn I cant remember the name. Those were fun times.
For all the theatres that California lost look at how many were luckily saved. We dont have a single Broadway house left showing movies. Art theatres like the Plaza, Bleeker and 8th St Playhouse are all memories. The Suttons days are numbered and how much longer will have Loews Tower East? New York is destined to have the same suburban multi-plexes as Long Island.
Did Walter Reade change this from revival to first run? I was only in here one time to see “Diabolique” and another film which escapes me at the moment.
The Fair never really changed away from being a porno cruise theatre. Although they advertised regular films for awhile they still had the lounges and booths they have now.
Remember what UA did to it at the end booking wise? It went out as a grind house. They used to joke it was the Marvin 1 & 2. (Marvin was a distributor of most of the lowest of the schlock films in the 70’s and 80’s they distributed for little companies with no distribution arm. If I remember right their office was right near The Rivoli).
Over the holidays I saw Bad Santa (hated it) in a multiplex and the film was started with then wrong lens, then the sound went out and the film broke 2x. When I was in the biz I would have given everyone a pass on the way out if they had not already demanded their money back.
My Fair Lady at The Cinerama was part of Broadway on Broadway. I talked about it on another post, maybe on the Dome site. I remember the print was a bit pink but the sound blew me away.
I just hope its not gutted, this would be the theatre to make into a Cinemateque type thing if there was financial backing. It’s in a good area and a size that is workable. As much as restoring the Demille might sound great, think of just the heating bill for a place like that.

Do I still see a huge roof signh saying the Jesse?

No still 2 seperate entrances.
This house made it open until the early 80’s if I remember right.
Dosent the Thalia deserve it’s own listing?

What kind of a run was the Lunt Fontanne (Globe) on when it showed movies?
Were these Cinerama or d-150 theatres?
I was talking about the cable station American Movie Classics :) I should have been clearer.
Does anyone remember the old marquee? It fell in the middle of the night during the blizzard of 1968. Nobody was hurt since it was like 3am.

I thought the Sound of Music sing along was a discrace
AMC has turned into a nightmare worse then other commercial laden stations.

Now that it has been announced that MOMA will be returning film to the original location whats going to happen to the Gramercy?
Is all of the renovating completed or is it a work in progress?
Paul, I was fortunate to have a projectionist friend who did the same for me. What a theatre it is.
Now it looks like a prison camp with all the concrete smeared on it.
