“I just saw the digital version in Clifton, NJ. It was quite beautiful. You could easily see all the incredible details in so many scenes. For example, the dinner recommendation on the wall of the kitchen on the Jupiter ship included roast beef, mashed potatoes, blueberry pie and coffee. I had never been able to read that before.”
All the IMAX screens are just 2k though not 4k unless you are talking a laser one/one of the few that can play IMAX film. Wouldn’t it show less detail than the 70mm print just played at say Paramus a few months ago?
Hi Bill, I saw 2001 on Friday at the Kips Bay. While I had seen the film quite a few times before, I had never seen it theatrically before and getting the extra detail and richness of color than you could find in home viewings was a pleasure. I didn’t notice anything off in that sequence you mentioned, but did notice a few shots which looked poor in the film, didn’t distract from about 98% of the movie looking great (and I figured if anything there could be issues inherent in the source elements of those shots).
Also saw The Dark Knight at this theater tonight, and even as good as 2001 it couldn’t quite compare (though I had seen the film in a regular screen theatrically when it first came out, and again a number of times at home since). A bit of dust and I noticed a hair in one shot, but this was either a new or very well preserved print, did notice a few seconds of shakiness twice (in the opening scene and Hong Kong sequence) which may have just been with this screening, but otherwise the image was rocksteady, the native IMAX footage was of course the jaw dropping highlight, but even the 35mm DMR material had some incredible looking images. Like 2001, there were no trailers (makes sense, 2001 is being done in roadshow format, and what 15/70 IMAX trailers would be available) in both cases I think a couple audience members were expecting those and didn’t get in till around 15 minutes into the films.
No trailers before the 70mm version or the digital version. There was an IMAX promo before the digital version, announcing they were going to show what will be coming soon in IMAX, but it led right into the overture of 2001.
They should show a 5/70MM version at the Regal E Walk across the street from the Empire. FILM.
Did they show any trailers before the digital version
The digital version is also showing at the AMC Kips Bay on 2nd Ave. and 32nd St. in Manhattan, as well as the Empire 42nd St.

But it wasn’t perfect. One shot near the end, part of the “last meal” sequence, came out wrong somehow. It was too dark and a little blurry. Don’t know if all digital prints have this problem. The opening MGM logo also looked like the wrong color.
Overall, definitely worth seeing. Can’t believe it’s in 350 theaters across the US. What other 50-year-old movie could accomplish that?
The New York Philharmonic is also showing “2001” on September 14 & 15 with live musical accompaniment. They have a print with dialogue only.

How is the digital IMAX version?
The restored print is showing at the AMC Empire on 42nd Street. I myself an seeing it at the Regal New Roc Center in New Rochelle on a true IMAX screen.
Hello-
I thought the only IMAX 2001 print to play NYC was the unrestored one playing this week at Lincoln Square. when is an IMAX print of the restored 4K version playing NYC?
WOW!! EXPERIENCED “2001” at the AMC IMAX theater (68th S. and Broadway) here in New York City at 9:30 AM yesterday (Aug 25, 2018). Ticket was $19.29 including Fandango service charge.
What a THRILL!! The theater was about 1/3 capacity. The 70mm print was from the original negatives with no restoring. It didn’t need it. (Although I did miss the surround sound. All the great original multi-track sound was only from the screen. Perhaps the projectionist didn’t press the “surround” button. I was all set to be raised even higher out of my recliner seat with Zarathustra .et.al.!!) They even played the “prologue” voice music, and kept the INTERMISSION. (Noticed the screen was not white but a dark grey?? Sure a new acoustic fabric!!) I first saw “2001”, now that I think of it, also on Broadway down in the Times Square area in the Warner (Cinerama) Theater in 1968. After 50 years I’m still awed with each frame, and still processing the message/s!! I mentioned to a fellow viewer at intermission they might well rename it to “3001” as we have a long way to go from where we were while experiencing the masterpiece.
I’ve read they’re releasing a restored version in 350 IMAX theaters later on.

Yes, it has been announced that IMAX film print showings of 2001 are based on the unrestored 70mm version, and just photochemical blow ups to IMAX rather than going through the IMAX remastering process most Hollywood releases do. I’m pretty sure it will be shown letterbox in 2.20 aspect ratio given there is no material for an expanded aspect ratio version (if you want to see the screen filled, either the IMAX sequences in Dark Knight, or the currently playing Documentary Pandas, will do so).
The digital IMAX showings of 2001 though will be based on a new 4K restoration though. Personally I want to see it at Kips Bay or AMC Empire as I’m interested in what the remaster looks like.
The source material for the 2001 70mm IMAX print will be from Nolan’s new 70mm prints but it will be issued in Imax form. I don’t know the aspect ratio. Since 2001 wasn’t filmed with IMAX film cameras, which produce more resolution than regular 70mm film, I don’t figure how there will be any benefit other than giant screen. I wonder how it will look in imax compared to a regular 70mm print. Any eta on the dolby?
bigjoe59, it will be IMAX. I was in contact with Warner Bros when I heard it was coming because if it was 70MM my team would have been running it. We don’t do the IMAX.
Hello-
as many people are I am a bit confused by screen aspect ratios. for instance when 2001 played the Village East in May in was advertised as being shown in 70MM film. so is the upcoming screening in the IMAX auditorium going to be the same 70MM film print or will in be in IMAX. i’m of course assuming an IMAX film would have a larger aspect ration.
The Dark Knight is showing at 9:00 PM daily. Those performances are pretty well sold out through at the weekend. Both films are being shown 15/70mm.
Hello-
I thank mhvbear for their reply. if understand the info correctly 2001 won’t be the IMAX theater’s sole occupant such limited screenings.
The seats are on sale on Fandango. Daily shows at 1:15 PM & 5:00 PM, with 9:30 AM shows on Saturday & Sunday.
I wonder if the loews name will be removed from this theater in the near future since AMC is phasing out the name completely while it renovates the loews theatres.
Hello-
I just read an article that said tickets for the film’s one week release in IMAX went on sale August 3rd. i see nothing on this theater’s official ticket order page.
Hello-
what exactly is the schedule of 2001 being shown
in the IMAX auditorium?
Bill Huelbig, No I will not. The theatre had retained Local 306 projectionists for 70MM IMAX showings. I’m hoping something comes along soon. I only worked two days all of July and have nothing till August 18.
