Too bad “Superman” didn’t come out until Christmas of that year…had it been released during the summertime it would’ve done good business and be the first superhero movie ever released during the summer; its sequel would become the first superhero movie to be released in America during the summer, although it came out a bit earlier in Europe during the thankgiving holidays.
After the renovations in 1999, the Hall looked like it was new again, and it still is. It’s still one of the best guarded places in New York, and one that’s more famous and better than The Garden. If the Rockettes were a sports team, they would beat up them Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty!!! After the Newsday debacle and the removal of the Voom HD channels from Dish TV (only Cablevision is the only system to have those 15 channels, which is too much for compression), Cablevision is not focusing on its other companies such as AMC, which is starting to show more drama shows ala FX, as well as Clearview Cinemas, which is putting nearly all of its newer cinemas with digital projection. Not to mention the classy Hall!!!
good article. BTW, will there be new sound systems in each auditorium as well as projectors, or will it still the the same old Newton twin when New Day acquired the theater for awhile?
thanks for the comment, movie534. THat’s why I mostly watch new movies on blu-ray and on my hdtv rather than fork a lot of cash to see a movie on a blurry screen!!!
The next Indiana Jones will not be shown in DLP, but plain old film, the way the director intended it to be. Only Narnia will be the only major movie to be shown in DLP this weekend.
I checked out the upcoming movie schedule for this theater, and Narnia will play on 4 screens this weekend; next weekend, Indy will be on 4 or more screens and will be shown in 35mm. Spielberg shot this movie on plain old film rather than digital as opposed to the producer of the movie, George Lucas, who is a supporter of digital cinema ever since Episode I came out in Paramus and Secaucus.
This is the closest Clearview north of Rockaway, with Parsippany to the east, Succasunna to the west, and Morristown to the south, and Chester to the southwest. Pretty soon all Clearviews that make money will have digital projection from Thomson, who ships the DLP projection systems to the chain.
This is because Paramount has a deal that only allows a movie to be shown for three or four weeks at select theaters, probably single screen theaters who want to show one movie a month. This was a practice given to Paramount’s previous summer release, Iron Man. Also, you misspelled Ziegfeld wrong, al pettiford.
went to see a 4:50 showing of “Iron Man”, the projection was a bit blurry but the surround sound was great and the crowd was filling the stadium seats but not the rocking seats near the large screen. The film started to being around 2 minutes late….and one of the toilets in the mens rooms was out of order as well as a running sink!!!! Any update on the IMAX rollout coming to Rockaway? So far, only DC and some other city will have the system up and running for the new system!!!
I agree. The last movie that did really well at this theater was Titanic, several years before Loews opened up the E-Walk. Back then, they had three theaters in Times Square, the E-Walk (now Regeal), the State (now being used for retail space), and of course the Astor. This is quite similiar to what Loews had when it opened and still manages the two Secaucus theaters located not to far from each other although they compete with just one theater down in North Bergen (run by Starplex, a small chain) and will soon close thanks in part to the new massive Xanadu theater. BTW, when will the Ziegfeld page be back up and running? I haven’t seen it at the top ten recently commented or updated theater pages!!!
just checked out the theater’s website and they have advance showtimes for “Speed Racer”, which looks more like a videogame rather than a real car racing movie, and the new “Indiana Jones” movie. I read on Marvel’s website that inside the theater’s lobby there is a huge Hulk statue promoting his second big screen movie…hopefully it’ll be better than his last outing, which I saw at the Hadley in South Plainfeld and sucked!!!! Recently I read that Rockaway wasn’t included in the July opening of theaters equipped with IMAX…has it been delayed? Let me know…I can’t wait to see The Dark Knight in IMAX in Rockaway!!! And all the latest blockbusters that they’re showing is still pure 35mm film with the blurry projection and the loud surround sound!!!
Too bad “Star Wars” didn’t play at this theater when it came out nearly 31 years ago this month. BTW, when will the Ziegfeld page be back? It’s been nearly a week and no one has posted comments on it!!!
That’s what it’s all about. IMAX put the big back in big screen and still is the largest film format most people know. On occasion, an IMAX film will pop up on Mojo HD, even though it’s shown cropped to fit the tv screen rather than the tall screen, but the surround sound is still 5.1 even though it’s compressed to dolby digital for home theater use.
Iron Man is now playing on four screens, and Maid of Honor is on 2….btw how did business do for this theater from a year ago? I know Spider-Man 3 did more money than what Iron Man did this year, given the fact that “GTA IV” was released at many video game stores at the mall to huge crowds, not to mention at Blockbuster. Next week should be good for families, with the box office bomb “Speed Racer” and the cult arthouse film “RedBelt”, not to mention another Ashton Kutcher comedy that will falter once Narnia hits Rockaway for the first time. I predict the new Indy movie will nearly occupy half of the theater when it opens on May 22. And in 2 months and 3 days…imax comes just in time for “The Dark Knight”. At least the Jokerized trailer is not playing in most theaters….
Hopefully Narnia and Speed Racer open there, as the theater is known to show mostly family fare. The week of the 22nd when Indy comes out, hopefully it’ll play there as I’m going to nearby Newton Memorial Hospital for an appointment.
I agree with you. The only Asian cinema that most movie goers know is badly dubbed kung fu films, Japanese anime aimed at kids and adults, and Oscar-nominated movies. Directors such as Ang Lee, Mira Nair, John Woo, the Shaw Brothers, and Wong Kar-Wai are famous directors that brought casual moviegoers into watching these films. This merger is more fascinating than the AMC-Loews one, since it will put a challenge against the big guys that show an Asian flick once in awhile.
you should go to a nearby library, such as the clifton public library, which has a huge collection of microfilm. They might have it, but it’s mostly old issues of The Record and The New York Times, which usually run listings of NJ theaters on weekends, especially Sundays.

yes, on friday. hopefully it’ll be in the local newspapers, such as the Daily Record and surrounding newspapers.

so far, no advance showtimes on the internet….
Earlier this year, digital projection was installed in 5 out of the 10 screens.

yup. Maybe Imax should tinker with wider aspect ratios rather than the circular and regular format, try to be like Cinerama.

yup. Hopefully Indiana Jones won’t whip up the ticket price!!!

not to mention stupid movies coming out like speed racer and once in awhile a good blockbuster movie like the new dark knight movie!!!

I agree with you. Making stuff out of clay is more fun than creating something out of CGI.
maybe outage related issues….
