yup. We have all the needs for entertainment at our fingertips. Back in the old days, the only means were the paper, the theater for movies and or plays, and sporting events.

the amc near me in rockaway is getting film prints for both films by the studio. Like transformers last year, these reels must be unlocked using a special code for projectionists to put into the projector.

like its sister cinema in Parsippany, this theater has been quiet on selling tix to “Iron Man”, “Speed Racer”, and “Narnia”. “Speed Racer” will be shown on one screen with RWC/DVS, and on another screen. I saw the first Narnia movie in one of the two new auditoriums on opening weekend, and it was a great experience. Now it will finally show “Narnia 2” in DLP. I saw a trailer for that in DLP before the showing of National Treasure, it looks lifelike!! And it seems that the Clearviews near me have been showing those NCM Fathom features more than Rockaway, which heavily advertises it on its screens but hasn’t been playing them ever.

just checked clearview’s website….they still have showtimes for Iron Man on opening night on 4 screens, not to mention getting advance showtimes for Speed Racer first before Rockaway did and showing Narnia as their next major movie in DLP. Nearly every movie listed at this theater is being shown in DLP, while the Rockaway theater sticks with 35mm and RWC/DVS in some of its screens for blind and deaf people, which is the same at the Parsippany theater, but this theater still lacks stadium seating, which would cost Clearview a lot of money to refurbish, as it spend some money installing most of its popular theaters with digital projection.

Having been to both locations where FYE and Best Buy stand where the old theaters used to be, the size of both theaters combined would be very equal to the Rockaway 16, but a bit smaller and with sloped seating. The Outers probably had larger screens than the Inners and were located within walking distance of ACME and other shops. Inside the Best Buy, there’s a Magnolia showroom that could be mistaken for one of the screening rooms at the old Rockaway theater, but with high-tech gadgets.

Just checked the advanced tickets for “Iron Man” on opening night, which is a Thursday….4 out of 6 showings have been sold out. This is good news…considering that the past few weekends have been kind of slow at this theater. As for “Narnia”, there’s still tickets available for the midnight showing. It’s good that AMC is still sticking to showing these movies in plain old 35mm with Dolby Digital surround sound!!!

Check out ESPN right now, the Hall is now on TV just in time for the NFL Draft. This event was first held at the hall in 2006 after being held at the Jacob Center for a few years before the infamous West Side Stadium dispute began, of which Cablevision was involved. Recently, Elton John performed a sold-out fundraiser for the Democratic Party. The first sporting event held here was a boxing match. Lots of cool things have happened at the Hall since they stopping showing so much movies and relying more on rockettes and concerts. Are there plans to restore the hall again in the near future? They should install a scrolling LED banner below the “Radio City” sign so that it’s high tech.

what’s the latest on the classics? What movies will be playing there? I hope they show “The Matrix” next year since it’s the 10th anniversary of that movie!!!

That sucks….even 10 screeners aren’t doing as well as those with 16 or more screens. Look at what the Empire 25 in Manhattan is doing to other theaters in Manhattan by being the most popular in that borough and the USA.

Advance tickets are now available for “Iron Man”, but not for “Speed Racer” or “Indy 4” yet. It won’t be long until the new Batman movie that AMC gets its first taste of digital projection, IMAX-style. I read on CanMag that when Iron Man opens at midnight on the 4th, the movie will play in the biggest auditoriums of a multiplex. In this case, 8 and 9 are likely candidates. I read good things about this movie, not to mention the new Indiana Jones and Speed Racer. That should bring people back to the movies not to mention shopping even though we might be in tough times with high gas prices that are not as high as those in California!!!

Maybe AMC should take a page from Paramus and Rockaway and rebuild the theater as a 16-screen stadium seater with digital sound and picture, in order to spruce up the shopping area.

Just went by the theater on my way back from CVS via MAPS on a route to pick up someone at an office building on Eagle Rock Ave. not too far from the Loews and on the marquee the movie names aren’t there anymore…..it says “Welcome to AMC Loews East Hanover 12. For showtimes and tickets go to moviewatcher.com or call the theater’s phone number”. Sign of the times, indeed.

Yep. Shirley Temple was a great child actor, compared with others who take drugs like Heath Ledger, Macaulay Culkin, and Brad Renfro.

My stepmom actually toured the place a few weeks ago while on business leave. She says the original building is still there, alongside the additional screens next to it.

the interior of the AMC Rockaway (the lobby) doesn’t have that great mural that the Garden State 16 has. It’s very bland, except for the two HDTVs to the left and right of the AMC logo, as well as the chandelier. The automatic dryers in the bathrooms are really great.

back in the old days, the only thing that was distracting was crying babies, coughing, screaming, and sneezing. Nowadays, it’s beepers, ipods, and cellphones. This is one reason why I watch most movies in my own room.

btw, on friday night, an exciting game 5 of the hockey playoffs between the Rangers and Devils was shown, and it was a good game (which I saw on MSG HD, since that was the same broadcast that was beamed to the Ziegfeld’s screen). As for James Bond, the next bond movie might play at this theater later this year if Indiana Jones continues to do well. There’s a cover story of that movie in EW, just to let you know. And it will be shown digitally from a 35mm source.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway Inner 6/Outer 6 on Apr 15, 2008 at 1:13 pm

When the Outers were renovated in 1994, SDDS was installed alongside the Dolby systems as part of the chain’s agreement with Sony Cinema Digital Products (sic) to install the less popular sound system in all of its theaters. The movie that I saw in one of the lower number houses was presented in Dolby Digital. No wonder why AMC discontinued SDDS in 2003 in favor of Dolby Digital EX as well as PCM surround sound in its newer auditoriums. Originally, Loews wanted to make the theater in Rockaway, but residents were happy to see AMC return there when the chain merged with the struggling company ten months before the 16-plex opened.

This year will be the second for AMC’s Summer Movie Camp at this theater. I remember General Cinema used to promote this before AMC brought the idea to its theaters after acquiring the chain. Too bad I can’t go see those movies during the summer for $1 since I’m at work and that most of those movies are already out on DVD, HD-DVD, and Bluray!!! While that is going on, the one thing I’m looking forward to at this theater will be the arrival of the new IMAX system at one of the smaller screens. Any word on which screen it is? If I’m correct, the first movie to be shown with the new system will be the Batman Begins sequel. And I’m excited to see Indiana Jones on the big screen for the first time, as well as other summer movies and this coming weekend, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

moviebuff82 commented about NuWilshire currently an eyesore in Santa Monica on Apr 15, 2008 at 12:36 pm

This is like the same thing that happened with some theaters in New Jersey. Right now the Tenplex is the biggest moviegoing eyesore, as well as the old Franklin Triplex which still stands there and where the HQ of the mayor of Nutley is right above the theater, which only has the sign damaged.
