A typical street scene in Chicago’s old Ceska Kalifornie neighborhood, now known as Little Village. Here, this circa 1917 image from my collection features J. Klepsa as he stands in front of his cigar shop located at 3823 W. 26th St.
The cigar shop used to be a gathering place for men to converse, and share neighborhood happenings and gossip.
Current street view shows the facade was either encapsulated or heavily modified.
It maintains the same height as it’s neighboring building to the right.
The street name is Balbo Drive, not Balboa.
Originally 7th Street, it was renamed in 1933 after Italo Balbo.
Not sure why maps are showing it as an Avenue.
There was recently a protest to rename it after Ida B. Wells.
