The State Theater has really deteriorated in the last 2 years. The place looks to be in near shambles on the outside. All the doors were boarded up, and the building seems to be slowly falling apart. Very sad.
Here’s a photo I took of the Joy Theater last week when I was in New Orleans, that has the marquee of the State in the background. Two very sad Theaters.

The place is deteriorating more and more as we speak. I thought it looked bad a few years ago when I past it, but now, it’s in complete shambles. Here’s a photo I took of it last week when I was in New Orleans:

Here’s a photo I took of two streetcars in New Orleans last week, but I noticed I got the marquee of the old Saenger in the background.
The marquee says:

WE DAT!!
WORLD CHAMPION SAINTS!

The theater itself looked horrible though. The right side of the building had all the windows boarded up, and plywood covered all the entrance doors. The place looked awful….Hopefully the place gets renovated, as it used to look so good.

That’s too bad. Although I don’t remember it being anything special inside even when it was a theater.

I have seen current photos of the old 14 Holy Martyrs Church, and it is restored beautifully.
Any current photos of the interior of the Gates would be appreciated….I heard it too was restored inside. It would be great to see it.

It’s great seeing the old photos of the Drake! Just like I remember it….I remember seeing a couple movies there in the 1980’s.
What if anything of the interior remains on the inside of the now Catering hall?

If someone ever gets to the Municipal archieves on Chambers St, they have photos of all the properties in NY taken in the 1930’s and again in the 1980’s. They are available for purchase online, however, if you go in person, you can print photos on their printer. Not as good as a real photo, but at least it’s affordable (they charge like 10 cents or something per print page).

Bway commented about United Palace of Cultural Arts on Feb 15, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Theaters listed on CT are listed by their current name if they are still used as a Theater. The United Palace is now the name of this Theater….175th St is a former name, even if the more famous name. It’s to keep consistent within the site. There are many theaters listed by a less known name, because that is the current name of the theater.
Theaters that closed use the last name used for the theater.

Look at it this way…..it’s better that this theater is gloriously restored and intact and called the “United Palace” than the alternative….that it’s called the “175th St Theater”, and it’s a pile of rubble or in shambles like let’s say the Loews Pitkin…

Ahhh, thanks so much, very interesting. So the smaller theaters are actually the two back corners of the real auditorium. That’s what I couldn’t figure out, as the main theater looked “normal”, it’s just that it’s “shorter” now. It does keep the aesthetics of cutting a theater up. Best of both worlds…

Interesting, I didn’t realize this was the same operation that used to do the laser shows at the Grifith Observatory, I had gone to a laser show at the Grifith Observatory about 10 years ago. I was sorry to hear they closed the show at the observatory. What do they use the Observatory for now?

What are the two smaller theaters carved out of? Was the main auditorium cut up into the three auditoriums, or were the two smaller ones carved out of other areas of the theater?

Correct, it’s not photobucket, those photos were removed. I remember seeing them, and The entire ceiling above the proscenium has collapsed to the floor, severe water damage on the right side of the stage, also plaster destroyed. All the seats gone. Severe water damage throughout….and those photos were a number of years old….the place couldn’t have gotten better.

Here’s a street view of the Colemann Theater. The map link above does not bring you to the right main st in Miami, it brings you to Main St in Commerce for some reason, but if you pan down, you can find Main St in Miami, a TOTALLY different looking town!

Anyway, here’s the street view at N Main St and 1st Ave in Miami:

While there are no photos of the interior, according to the quotes the theater is basically intact inside, aside from the seats being gone, apparently much of the plaster is intact. I am sure at this point, it’s just a matter of time till we see a long awaited interior photo of the theater.

Actually, I found a 1980 view, which shows the original roofline. This image however has north on the top, while the Bing one I posted earlier has north on the bottom, so just remember you are looking at it upside down from the bing.com map. Also, notice the old Forest Hill Theater’s roof is also still intact in the 1980’s image.

Bway commented about Elmwood Theatre on Jan 7, 2010 at 8:32 am

Correct. And no one is upset the church is in there….I think it’s great, and it’s great the building has great use. But that is irrelevant to a discussion on what they did to the exterior of a beautiful old historic building. The building now looks like any other nondescript, “cheap” looking modern building that has a crappy faux stucco exterior. It may as well been built in “2005” as it’s no different than any other crappy construction new building put up. It lost it’s historical beauty.
