Good luck trying to get old theatre employees to talk.this from a guy who just had nice theatre reunion back in the fall of 2009.Told old stories for hours.Then mentioned Cinema Treasures and how we could all talk about each of the theatres and here it is 2010 and not a single one has gotten on.It drives you crazy.Someone will take the time to meet at a nice steak house for a couple of hours of theatre talk and then not get on CT.I enjoy reading old theatre employees posts more than any other post on CT.Cause We lived it,not dreamed it.
The Abbott theatre had Smoke and Water damage following a fire that destroyed two neighboring Buildings.A community group thatre abandoned the Abbott in 1991.The theatre had served the town for a quarter of a century.Due to maintenance and Structural problems the Abbott was condemned.
Manager Dorean Sherd was named Manager of the year for Wisconsin and three other Neighboring states.She won $500.00 nice extra money for your underpaid theatre manager.Special stunts at Southgate to promote movies won the award for her.Something you never SEE anymore.
Here is something from BOXOFFICE,July 1984 on the Bowl Drive-in. West River Associates ,a group of businessmen,Bought the Bowl Drive-in with plans to put an industrial park there.
This from BOXOFFICE on a great theatre.On the 70mm screen installed a “introduction loop” which helps those wearing hearing aids,a private parking lot and a cheap ticket rate $2.00 all afternoon shows and changing to $4.00 dollars starting at 6 pm.The manager at the time was William Hewitt and he was proud of the “intro loop” for those hearing impaired customers.They were the only theatre in Baltimoe that had the “loop"It works in conjucntion with hearing aids.The system works and customers are happy according to Hewitt.{Boxoffice,July 1984}
According to BOXOFFICE The Fairfax Cinemas being a Cineplex-Odeon theatre announced a two dollar All-the-time admission at this L.A. theatre.It will be for a trial period.It will show “encore” films for a two dollar admission price.Cineplex-Odeon wants to see the response to second run movies.Oct 1994.
The North Point Market was opened in 1994.{BOXOFFICE.Oct.1994}The theatres had only eight screens when some outfits were adding more screens.Half of the theatres seated over 400 people with room to enjoy a movie.The other screens seat over 200 moviegores.United Artist theatres thought was that it will be more like the old days of moviegoing.“Bigger Auditoriums and larger screens”.
Complaining about Polish jokes in “THE END”,give me a break.ARCHIE BUNKER let out more polish jokes than Burt Reynolds ever did,I can tell you one thing 100 % true they sold tickets with that protest.
If they put an intermission in “EMPIRE” good thing George Lucas never found out.I have read where some theatres in small towns and cities like Tampa put intermissions in movies some well under two hours long in running time,Minnesota Jones.
That vintage photo,if those were one sheets out front of the Alamo Theatre just think what they would worth today.
I read somewhere on CT that KISS played a Drive-in in the early years of the band.
