a theater re-opening in Westwood?!? (rubbing eyes) this can’t be.
This is wonderful news! I have visited the Crest many times on my trips to Los Angeles, and it is one of my favorite theaters. I hope the moviegoing public will support it this time. I know I will.
Very nice. Looks like it will return to MAJESTIC and not BIGFOOT.
I cannot believe this is happening but… It’s re-opening again! Miracles do happen.
It is not reopened. THE LION KING was simply the last movie that they played. And at $4.5m, there is very little chance it will ever be open as a movie theater again.
Does that mean it’s reopened?

I just wish somebody could take the “Bigfoot” name off the Crest. I am sure Mission Impossible will give the Regent the biggest crowds it has had in a while. Decent theatre. Should get better bookings now that it is only one of 3 screens remaining in Westwood.
the REGENT is getting Mission Impossible? That makes no sense, nobody will see it there. Westwood is faint flicker of memories of what was the last great era of cinema. It’s over now. Like Roy Batty at the end of Blade Runner, the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and it burned so very very brightly. Time…to die
Yeah, it could never break even with that lease-price. The one upside is maybe with so few Westwood theaters left, they will be able to do better. The Regent, for instance, is getting MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4 next week.

That area is really sad now. Avco Center is closed, the enormous Borders Books a block away is shuttered, and this wonderful theater seems doomed.

That worked so well for the NuWilshire.
I think that Disney’s association with the Crest actually goes back to the Pacific Theatres era. In fact, they seemed to have their hooks into a couple different Pacific screens before they finally settled on the El Capitan, including the Cinerama Dome. But getting back to the Crest, I always liked this screen. The interior was a bit over the top, but I always had a good time there.

Parking is terrible in Westwood. The cheaper parking lots I used to park in are gone.
I think the Landmark 12’s success really hurt the Crest the most. The Crest used to be able to open First Run Independent films and would get an audience. Now those films go to Landmark first and instead. The Crest should probably be converted into a Guild theatre, along with periodic Retrospective and Special Engagements.
In the Village itself, yes, but the Crest long had a deal with the AMPCO Garage next to the library for $2 validation. That garage stopped operating at extended hours 2-3 years ago, meaning it only became an afternoons-only option.
Danny, the problems with parking for movies in Westwood have been like that for decades, at least since the mid-1980s, when I moved back to Los Angeles after graduating high school and started going to movies in Westwood.
I attended all three days of the Crest’s closing weekend, “Singafest Asian Film Festival.” Average screening attendance was only 30-50; however, the Saturday tribute to Sonny Chiba drew about 350.
Some scary moments for the delicate screen as martial arts demonstrations featured swords that almost touched the screen. Several hands did touch the screen.
Did anyone else attend? I contribute 20 paid movie admissions a month and hope you do likewise. FYI, Graumans Chinese has a great lobby exhibit of costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe, Vivian Leigh, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, and others. Check it out with a PAID admission.

Was at the Vista for “Moneyball” last night and they had 100 patrons on a Monday! The outer lobby card advertised the annual midnight showing, Nov 5, for “Phantom of the Opera”, which I saw last Nov 6 at the Crest. Contact for tickets. Last year Mary indicated she was trying to get Gerard Butler to attend in 2011.
Let’s all attend as many Singafest movies as possible this Friday-Sunday. Students/Seniors/Cinemateque members pay only $8 per movie.
They have booked almost exclusively Disney product during Carmike’s year. It’s just an impossible location now. Westwood is no longer a prime destination, on weekends you either have to $4 pay to park or get lucky finding a meter, and competition from the nearby megaplexes is heavy… Same reasons the other Westwood locations have fallen by the wayside over the past decade. Crazy to think that we will soon only have three and, if Landmark doesn’t re-up on the Regent, two, operating theaters left in the Village.
I kind of agree with other comments that “closed for renovations” seems to be a euphemism for “closed indefinitely”.
Some thoughts: 1) For years the prior owner seemed to have some sort of arrangement with Disney, because Disney product always seemed to be playing at the Majestic Crest. Maybe that relationship could be resurrected…
2) Or this: The description above says “Opened … as the Westwood Theatre a live theatre.” Does anyone know if its old backstage areas and dressing rooms are still intact? Maybe it could be survive by converting back to a live theater.
3) Unthinkable to twin or tri-plex it- the unique cityscape interior wall artwork, which is what makes it so special, would be destroyed. (Plus it has historical designation).
4) So the “Singafest Asian Film Festival” runs through Oct 2nd. After that, will it be sayonara to The Majestic Crest? (which I prefer over “Bigfoot Crest”)
This does not sound temporary. It sounds like they are walking away from it and putting for sale. Too bad American Cinemateque has the Aero because the Crest would be great for a Repertory theatre like the Egyptian. Having 2 theatres on the Westside would be too much.
Westwood is going to turn into Los Feliz. Once the Crest and Avco close there will only be the Village, Bruin and Regent in the heart of Westwood. It will be less of a district and instead will just be a few theatres in one area.
If it was definitely temporary, they wouldn’t be dropping Carmike and not specifying a completion date.
