Would make sense. They are just starting to break ground at the one Bloor site so there is still a slight chance whether it be Cineplex or Empire to enter a partnership to build a new complex there in the tower. Doubt Rainbow would have the capital to make the move and still a tad close to the Yonge and Dundas AMC to put one there.
I think the only reason they dropped One Bloor is because it was no longer Famous Players but Cineplex, who already has the Varsity. What gets me is that at one time Famous Players had ALL the theatres at Yonge/Bloor/Bay except the Varsity. (cumberland4, university, plaza twin, towne cinema, uptown 5) So why Cineplex couldn’t have 2 complexes a block apart is beyond me. The Varsity could have become a classy art house and the new one more Hollywood fare.
Yeah I am not surprised about the later two projects and would have been great to see them come to frutition. I guess you can say that the AMC venue that finally got built scared off the Imperial Project and the economy and delay in the condo building at Yonge and Bloor along with how active a venue Varsity is scared off any further building for multiplexes in the area (plus the fact they took over the lease for the Cumberland as well).
Famous Players had all kinds of plans that never came to be. They were going to build a new Imperial Six in the basement of the Ryrie Bldg at Yonge and Shuter, a new University 9 in the complex that replaced the University using the facade and old entrance. And ultimately a new 10 screener at Yonge & Bloor to replace the Uptown in what is now becoming the condo One Bloor E. Too bad that one didn’t get built before the merger. Somewhere I have newspaper articles on all of these announcements.
If I remember correctly that was probably before the merger of Famous and Cineplex so probably got scared off and wanted to build it where they had more control of the property. Now it would have made complete sense. That being said would have been branded as a Silvercity and I am not sure how the original name or theatre would have worked into it unless they tried a similar method of renos comprable to the Varsity.
At one time years ago, Famous Players was considering re-developing it’s Hollywood site at Yonge & St Clair in to a multiplex. Instead however they built Silvercity at Yonge & Eglinton. Too bad since we would have that one where the Hollywood was and the Canada Square up at Eglinton.
Can kind of understand why the ones at Yonge and St Clair never got replaced since there is a over abundance at Yonge and Eglington with the Sulvercity, Canada Square and 2 rep houses as well on Mount Pleasent. But the Eg and York I still really miss terribly for the classic feel even though theres a oversaturation. I have a feeling unfortunately until there is more influx in those areas or development that there isnt going to be any multiplexes in those areas although now that the power plant is uspposedly shutting down at Dundas near Dixie and the land is all surveyed for a complex to be put in there, the property is just ripe and ready to go. The only theatre in the BeacheséDanforth area that seems to be thriving is the Fox although there is the Projection Booth that just opened near Broadview and Jarvis area which is supposed to be good.
Same with Chicago. They still have the Logan, Davis, Century Centre and other neighbourhood theatres open. I always thought that there were other parts of Toronto that should have theatres too. Like Liberty Village seems to be an area that could have one. I miss theatres in the Eglinton/Avenue rd area as well as the Yonge/St Clair area. For some reason, Danforth hasn’t been able to support one but I wish there were more like the Beach Cinemas around town, not too big, 4-6 screens with all the bells and whistles. Miss the Bayview Village cinemas too, seemed perfect, just the right size too. And have always always found it puzzling why there is not ONE cinema of any size in southern Mississauga, south of the QEW where I grew up. If you want to go to a move, you have to go way up to Square One area or drive several miles east to the Queensway.
Big time. I always found that coming back from LA and NYC, whenever I came back that Torontos film exhibition is defintely lacking, especially in the venues with all of the history. I am really intrigued with the evolution of the Bloor when they reopen under Hot Docs, and I am totally hoping someone else picks up where Rui left off with Humber to finish the retofit and adds some success with the venue.
Well whatever the reason it’s just too bad. This is a lovely theatre in a great part of town and was the last of the “original” Odeons built in the late 40s..would have been terrific if it had been a great success. Having just returned from NYC last weekend, I was impressed at how many neighbourhoods still have thriving theatres like we used to. Here they are mainly downtown and in outlying malls. It was nice to have this Bloor West theatre open again, even if only for a few months. Such a shame…
Quite bummed since the rennovations they were able to compete were actually quite good and was planning to go their once TIFF wrapped to see the progress in the basement since they had just opened that part of the space in late July, early August.
Yeah I was hearing from some of my friends who live in the area and also work the festival circuit that unfortunately was the standard couldnt keep up on the rent of the space hence the very sudden closure of the theatre. As to why that happened hard to say but I am imagining it was one of those situations might have moved too fast with the rennovations in the basement after opening…. Just a thought. But within a day or two the facebook group removed any mention of the Humber and affilated posts and created a brand new page for the Kingsway Theatre which is back to being their main focus.
Well has anyone heard ANYTHING about this theatre? There was so much hype about it reopening after all those years and now nothing.
I hope this theater can ultimately be a success because it’s near identical to the Odeon I lost in 1988 in London Ontario.
Some beautiful photos of the Humber on the urban Toronto website listed above by hdtv267. Such a shame. I had a terrible feeling that this was all too good to be true when this reopened. A movie theatre compliments this neighbourhood so much, obviously the people of Bloor West Village, Swansea and the much posher Kingsway area don’t agree.

I heard the Humber has just closed again suddenly!? Very upsetting!
Local merchants had their eyes on the screen for the opening night of the Odeon Humber. Ad from January, 1949 over at Silent Toronto.
The posting here will have to be changed to just the “Humber Cinema” since it’s no longer a Cineplex Odeon.
Humber Cinema opens Friday April 29th – with Fast Five – all first run all big screen premiere pictures!

We are pushing for late spring – lots of big movies coming out in May and June.
Have you actual set a hard date for the reopening or is still just aiming for spring?
