The “shameful” thing about this theater is all the goings on that happen there. It’s a well known meeting place and is always mentioned on the local Craigslist for “hookups” If it goes legit they’ll need haz-mat crews to clean up the place!
Perhaps DeNiro would be interested….he puts on those film festivals and while Bleecker may not be Tribeca at least it’s somewhat of a local landmark and deserves a better fate.
And why didn’t you post that in the first place? To answer your question: No I’m not always that rude, are you always this stupid? If you really did any reserach you’d see that I am NOT new here nor am I “always that rude” Am sorry to all the others here for publicly posting this
First I must apologize for my multiple posts…the system was not responding and gave me no indication that it actually accepted my posts.
Thanks for the feedback Warren. Dolly told me, as you stated, that her band was indeed filled with men but as they got drafted or volunteered she eventually ended up with an all girl ensemble. Sign of the times! She very much wanted to get into movies but the greed of her agent prevented it….he diverted any overtures from Hollywood out of fear of losing her as a client! What a bum, he prevented a far larger audience from knowing of her talent. Water under the bridge now. Back to our irregular programming.
Warren, you speak of all girl orchestras…do you know anything of Dolly Dawn and her Dawn Patrol? She was a family friend and (supposedly) had the first true all girl band and played many a nightclub and larger movie house. She told me of many times sharing the bill with the 3 Stooges etc and playing non-sensical card games backstage between shows….but I don’t recall what theaters. Sorry for taking this thread off on a tangent. Any info much appreciated.

While the theater is indeed closed, it is NOT gone….just drove by it last night (today is 2/11/05 Friday). Everything is still intact and even the neon parking lot sign is still lit.
I understand what you’re saying, but the reality is that the value of real estate in SF is such that when the big dollar people are involved their act jack that can realistically be done to prevent them from their doing what they want. I’m from NYC and distinctly recall that in the ‘60s one of the few remaining 5th Ave mansions was torn down over a weekend in defiance of a court order. Case closed.
To paraphrase what was written in the NY Times upon the demolition of the grandiose Pennsylvania Railroad Station “In the future we will be judged not for what we’ve built, but for what we’ve torn down”
There was an aborted Andy Kaufman film which was to have used a similar process. This is not really the place to go into details…I suggest a web search is in order.
Yep, and I bet Chaplin would be ashamed too. LOL Couple of days ago I heard on the local news that there would be a 45 day moratorium on demolition of theaters in the city. Don’t quite know what’s going on behind the scenes but obviously something’s up.
Am not 100% sure, but I believe this is the theater in which I saw the premiere of “Grand Prix” Found this site with some info on 70mm movies:View link (scroll all the way down) it indicates the name of the theater as “[Stanley-Warner] Warner Cinerama” but there’s nothing that comes close to that on this site. Can anyone confirm any of this? I recall watching this upstairs in the balcony and noticing the multiple beams of light from the seperate projectors (ambient smoke/dust making this visible). For a 8 year old kid, this action packed movie in 70mm and 6 track sound was pretty impressive. Thanks
Just this minute returned from checking out the theater. 11:43 pm 9/24/04 Everything is still closed up and the windows on the front doors are papered over but the lights in the lobby are still on and I was able to peek inside. It’s still all intact, that’s to say there’s no sign of demolition. What appears to be the candy counter is still there and it looks like with restocking this could be a turn key operation. There is a sign in one of the windows that says “Store for lease” and indicates interested parties should call some bank (which I don’t recall at the moment). Curious that they should involve a bank, perhaps the property was foreclosed upon?

Are there any interior photos of this theater on the net or perhaps in a book(s)?
This is the day after the (supposed) closing. Anyone have any new info?
Well the 17th has come and gone and not a word. Nothing on the local news and amazingly, nothing on this board. Anyone know anything?
Waaaaaaaaah! LOL

Pardon you, but what exactly does that mean? Date for WHAT? The last show? Thanks for that useless bit of info.
Suuuurrrreee you never went inside LOL!

That’s a bogus “reason”. The closing is/was never due to dimished attendence but that the owner’s want to develop the property for thier use.
Just heard on the news this very moment that tonight’s 10pm showing of Million Dollar Baby will be the last show. 6:58 am 2/13/05

The Clown: http://imdb.com/title/tt0044503/
The Yellow Cab Man: http://imdb.com/title/tt0043150/
Both of which are available in VHS at Amazon.com (no, I don’t work for them!)
Please pardon my previous typos…what I meant to say was:
“when big dollar people are involved, there ain’t jack….”
